Born in a log cabin in northern Wisconsin, USA, Sir Henry Solomon Wellcome (1853−1936) started his career working as a travelling salesman for a New York pharmaceutical company. He died a Knight of the British Empire, having established himself as a businessman, collector and philanthropist.
