Non-Communicable Disease (NCDs) are predicted to increase by 17% in the next ten years. Dr. Rodriguez-Fernandez is the Global Medical Director of NCDs and Workplace Wellness for International SOS in London explains the impact this is having on businesses.


Rapid urbanisation and globalisation are essential to the growth of many organisations and industries, but, combined with ageing populations, these are also the major factors that increase the probability of dying at an early age from a non- communicable disease. The World Health Organisation has named non- communicable diseases, also known as NCDs, a global epidemic. It’s a serious threat not only to individuals but also to the efficiency and triple bottom line of an organisation.

Increasingly, it’s becoming important to invest in assessment and preventative measures to protect the health of the workforce and organisation. Just as health is individual, so are the requirements of managing the health of a workforce.


THE THREAT NCDs consist of four groups of diseases – cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes and chronic lung diseases. According to WHO, around 70% of global deaths in 2015 were due to NCDs, overtaking infectious diseases


in the vast majority of countries.


Attributed largely to unhealthy diets, tobacco use, alcohol abuse and physical inactivity, NCDs have historically been associated with the economic development and wealth attainment most often found in high- income countries.


To an organisation, it can impact workforce efficiency, compliance with regulation and industry best practices, reputation and brand image, and create costs. NCDs are, to a great extent, preventable. While
