A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...

Each month we catch up with a health & safety professional to find out about their varied work/life balance. This month we chatted with Larry Wilson, CEO, SafeStart.

A DAY IN A LIFE 3

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THIS JOB?

After college I spent five and a half years in Los Angeles and New York modelling and acting. I was doing OK but after that length of time I knew that I really didn't have any God- given acting talent so I decided to get a real job.

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES?

Well, I'm the CEO and author of SafeStart, an advanced safety awareness and skills development programme. SafeStart is now being used in 64 countries by 3.5 million people, so just running that is quite demanding. I also write and develop training programmes for industry as well as writing and producing videos and movies for children, teenagers and athletes. I also speak at a lot of international conferences. But the most important aspect is figuring out the future vision and expanding the technology to quality, production, customer service and safety – because we are not trying to make any mistakes – let alone the ones that get us hurt.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY?

I was at a dinner meeting where we were discussing who would be the consultant for this behaviour- based observation programme our company was going to be selling. Someone had to look after the implementations. I had to use the men's room, and when I came back they had all decided that I should.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN A TYPICAL DAY?

No day is ever the same! To give you some idea – this week I am travelling to the UK where I will be hosting breakfast workshops across Windsor, Manchester and Dublin, filming video content with Eddie the Eagle and Terry Butcher (watch this space) and visiting two sites. On top of this are calls with the team around the world often very early in the morning or very late at night!

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OR

PROUDEST WORK MOMENT? Aside all the good stories I hear on a daily basis on how SafeStart helped people to be safer 24/7 on and off the job, a very fresh memorable moment was being told that my key note speech at the 2017 National Safety Council Congress & Expo in Indiana with Tim Page Bottorff, pulled in the biggest crowd ever in the history of the conference.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

Hearing how SafeStart impacts not only companies and workers but their entire families, physically seeing the mind-set change in shop floor employees after telling them more about the programme. And… getting the middle seat in the back of an empty plane!

WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF YOUR JOB?

I’m lucky enough to travel the world doing what I do, but the jetlag can be painful!

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE STARTING OUT IN THE

INDUSTRY? It’s got to mean something to you – it’s not a means to an end job. It’s a career that takes dedication, heart and soul and hard work, but it’s so worth it.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO UNWIND?

Being active – going to the gym, skiing, or swimming.

10

WHAT CAREER WOULD YOU LIKE IF YOU

WEREN’T DOING THIS? I really believe I’m doing what I was born to do, but if I had more time, I’d like to spend more time in the children’s entertainment industry.
