TECHNOLOGY IN H&S
THE FUTURE OF WORKPLACE TECHNOLOGY
As the technology we use in health and safety continues to evolve, Peoplesafe talks to Cam Stevens, a technologist and Chartered Health and Safety Professional, to explore the key trends at play.
In recent years, the workplace has undergone a significant transformation. Hybrid working models, an increase in lone working, and rising concerns about personal safety have combined to create a more complex risk landscape than ever before. At the same time, technology is advancing at pace, bringing fresh opportunities to help businesses protect their people, wherever they are.
There is a fundamental shift in how workplace safety is now being managed. More often, safety strategies are becoming proactive, tech-driven, and integrated into daily operations.
THE SHIFT TO SMARTER SAFETY SOLUTIONS Awareness of safety technology is rising quickly growing by more than 50% in just three years. This reflects not only growing concerns around personal safety but also increasing adoption of digital tools as effective risk management solutions.
To explore this trend, we spoke with Cam Stevens, a technologist and Chartered Health and Safety Professional. He explains: “I’m seeing a huge surge in workplace safety tech experimentation, which is great for exposure and curiosity – but many of these efforts lack a clear strategic intent.”

Technology is most impactful when it’s solving a specific problem. “The most widespread adoption is happening in driving-related tech: fatigue cameras, journey planning tools, in-vehicle monitoring, telematics, and map integrations. These aren’t new, but we’re finally seeing scale across industries.”
This change shows that business leaders are shifting their mindset to using technology strategically. Technology isn’t just a ‘nice to have’ anymore, it’s becoming a key part of risk management.
AI WITH PURPOSE With this focus on solving real problems, many organisations are now turning to artificial intelligence to enhance their safety strategies and help them work faster and smarter.
Cam adds: “AI is everywhere – at this point, not experimenting with AI puts you in the minority. Right now, AI is helping safety professionals become more efficient – think summarisation, report generation, and workflow automation – and more focused, with tools like computer vision and advanced analytics helping prioritise high-risk scenarios.”
Looking ahead, the integration of AI and machine learning has the potential to deepen these capabilities. By analysing large volumes of data from Internet of

Things (IoT) devices and wearable technology, AI could be used to identify emerging risks that might otherwise go unnoticed. For example, by analysing information from devices worn by workers, AI could flag emerging hazards early, allowing organisations to prevent incidents before they happen.
Cam also predicts the next breakthrough will be AI embedded directly in the flow of work. He says: “Multimodal, voice-first interfaces that personalise how information is delivered, improving real-time risk decision-making when hazards are interacting.” In practice, this would mean that safety technology could become more intuitive and adaptive, delivering relevant alerts without interrupting the worker’s tasks.
SMARTER, MORE CONNECTED SYSTEMS As workplace safety technology evolves, how these tools connect and communicate with each other will play a key role. APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) enable different systems to share data and work together in real time, helping organisations respond faster and support workers more effectively.
For example, Peoplesafe uses APIs within its Nexus platform to seamlessly integrate with existing HR and workforce management systems to save time, reduce admin, and drive usage.

Looking ahead, workplace safety technology will be defined by smart, connected systems designed with a clear purpose. AI, wearables, and integrated platforms will continue to evolve, but the most successful solutions will be those that solve real problems and fit naturally into how work gets done.
