CISTERMISER DELIVERS ENHANCED WATER CONTROL EFFICIENCY FOR RADISSON RED LONDON
HEATHROW UPGRADE A major bathroom refurbishment at the Radisson RED London Heathrow has been completed with significant improvements in water efficiency, hygiene and user experience – supported by the specification of Cistermiser infrared sensor taps and urinal control solutions.
The £2m transformation of the hotel's 250 bathrooms, delivered by SaveMoneyCutCarbon, focused on maximising sustainability and long-term cost savings without compromising guest comfort. Cistermiser’s proven washroom water management technology played a key role in achieving these objectives.
Radisson RED’s Heathrow hotel is one of the flagship properties in the brand’s portfolio, located minutes from the UK’s busiest airport and catering to high volumes of business and leisure travellers. With growing pressure on hospitality venues to reduce their environmental impact and meet ESG goals, the refurbishment provided an opportunity to futureproof the building’s water systems while upgrading its aesthetic and operational standards.
Touch-free technology
Cistermiser’s Sensazone and Infrared Taps were specified to replace dated manual fittings in all en-suite bathrooms. The Sensazone system controls the water supply to each washroom area using ceiling- mounted PIR motion sensors, activating water only when the space is occupied. Once the bathroom is vacated, the system automatically shuts off the water supply after a short delay, minimising the risk of leaks, reducing unnecessary consumption, and enhancing safety.
Complementing the Sensazone units are Cistermiser’s mains-fed infrared sensor taps, which were selected for their durability, low- maintenance design, and instant hands-free activation. The taps reduce water usage by controlling flow duration, limiting run time to
two seconds when not in continuous use, and delivering flow rates as low as 1.89 litres per minute – a dramatic reduction compared to typical manual tap usage.
“The hospitality sector is under increasing pressure to demonstrate meaningful water and energy savings while maintaining a premium experience for guests. Our sensor-operated systems are engineered to offer the best of both worlds – reducing consumption without disrupting comfort or ease of use,” says Richard Braid, Managing Director of Cistermiser.
Smart control
In addition to the en-suite upgrades, Cistermiser’s Easyflush Direct urinal control valves were installed in the hotel’s communal washroom areas. The Easyflush Direct system is a WRAS-approved, valve-based solution that connects directly to the mains water supply and uses infrared sensors to detect usage and deliver flushing on demand.
By eliminating the need for traditional cistern-based flushing, the system reduces water waste, removes a common source of maintenance issues, and supports compliance with UK Water Regulations. The built-in flush delay also prevents false activations, helping reduce water usage in high- traffic environments such as hotel lobbies and conference areas.
One of the key benefits of specifying Cistermiser systems across the hotel was the ability to measure and verify water savings in real time. Working in partnership with
SaveMoneyCutCarbon, Radisson RED is now monitoring its post- refurbishment consumption and expects to see a substantial year-on- year reduction in both water usage and utility bills.
Prior to the upgrade, manual taps and conventional flush systems contributed to unnecessary water use across the building. Following installation, early data suggests the hotel has reduced washroom water consumption by up to 70% in refurbished areas, contributing significantly to Radisson Hotel Group’s wider sustainability strategy.
The project also supports compliance with the BREEAM assessment methodology, helping futureproof the property against evolving standards for environmental performance in hospitality. Beyond water savings, Cistermiser’s product range was selected for its simplicity, reliability, and ease of integration into busy hospitality settings. Sensor taps and urinal controls are designed to operate effectively in high-demand environments, with vandal-resistant features, battery or mains-powered options, and minimal intervention required from facilities teams.
Cistermiser’s UK-based technical support team worked closely with SaveMoneyCutCarbon during the design and installation phase, ensuring correct specification and system commissioning. The result is a seamless, low-maintenance solution that complements the hotel’s bold new aesthetic while underpinning its operational goals.
