WHAT’S NEW? COLD SNAP MAKES FLU

FIGURES SOAR Public Health England has confirmed that in the first week of 2016, 62 people suffering from influenza have been hospitalised and placed in intensive care units (ICU). As the cold snap kicks in, revisiting the basics of hand hygiene is the best line of defence to stop influenza germs spreading.

Up to 15% of the population suffers influenza each year. In order to protect people from the virus, NHS guidelines state that hands should be regularly washed with soap under running, warm water.

Manty Stanley, Managing Director at TEAL Patents, said: “People suffer more commonly from influenza throughout the winter because the lower temperatures weaken the nose’s first line of defence making us more susceptible to infection.

“Although there is no real cure for influenza, it is widely recognised that following the gold standard of hand hygiene – by washing hands with soap and warm running water – may prevent its further spread,” said Manty.

TEAL Patents, manufactures portable hand wash units, which need no access to mains water or drainage. TEAL has been working in partnership with healthcare organisations and NHS infection control departments for over 15 years to design and provide units to meet specific requirements.

The TEAL Stop n’Wash™, has been designed in collaboration with infection control professionals to ensure it closely meets their needs. Designed to educate and encourage the correct hand washing procedures through its synchronised video display, the Stop n’Wash™ incorporates the seven hand rubbing actions stipulated by NHS-guidelines. Fully automatic and touch-free, it ensures hands are not re-infected at any stage during the handwashing process.

TRENDING IN VENDING

There has been a surge in people concerned about the environmental impact of paper and plastic products according to Packaging specialists 4 Aces.

According to Managing Director Chris Penn, they are “frequently asked about the supply of biodegradable and compostable products.” And with it they are concerned about an increase in cost and a decrease in shelf life.

Chris said: “The aim for us, moving forward, is to find a compromise that suits the customer and is an improvement to the environment. Cup dispensing has also long been a talking point amongst distributors as, often, more than one cup is pulled from a dispenser resulting in wasted cups or, even worse, put back into the top of the dispenser for reuse, causing concerns about cross contamination. We’ve solved this problem by creating a push button single drop dispenser that avoids the risk of touching cups other than the one dispensed.”

Water cooler distributors are now widening their offering to include more than just a machine that dispenses water and cups on the side. There’s a much wider choice of vending machines for all types of environments, allowing them to service the needs of the client without the involvement of additional suppliers.

Chris believes that: “The attraction lies in the added margins available through the coffee and tea service with additional ancillary product such as plastic spoons, sleeves, stirrers and, of course, automatic paper vending cups and coffee-to- go cups and lids. As the trend for wider beverage service amongst the water cooler distributors continues, our hot paper cup range will carry on growing.”

Traditional water cooler customers expect a more varied choice to offer to the end user. They want bigger and better with different grades of plastic, different pack sizes, different colours, paper cups, ripple cups, single wall, double wall, sleeves, lids, holders and trays.

Bottled water customers are always looking for smarter ways to increase water consumption and have managed this partly through driving the message home about hydration at work. They have also increased the cup size from 7oz to 9oz.
