SAFETY & SECURITY SYSTEMS
soſtware supplier was not going to resolve the issue for some months. Caremark had to invest time and resources to build manual workarounds in Excel for invoicing and payroll which franchisees were able to use. They came through it and took it as an opportunity to learn, as their Joint CEO David Glover told us: “Our business continuity plan only covered a soſtware outage of a few days, whereas this went on for months. Our plan is much stronger now as it prepares for eventualities that you would like to assume would never happen.”
GO DIGITAL – BUT GO SAFELY
According to the Digitising Social Care programme, most providers are persuaded to digitise by the significant amount of time their staff save in administrative tasks every shiſt, in some cases up to an hour. But they’re also hearing that audits are much faster, which as a result can be done more frequently, and that managers are seeing the greatest time savings overall. Voice to text functionality in digital social care records is helping care staff who struggle with writing feel more confident in their work, in one case going on to become the digital champion for their organisation.
This is why we strongly encourage care providers to make the most of technology but always build in, monitor and maintain good data and cyber security arrangements.
SUPPORT AND PROGRESS
At the Better Security, Better Care programme we are seeing a real increase in awareness of data protection. Now, 70% of
adult social care providers are using the Data Security and Protection Toolkit – the official self-assessment tool – to check and improve their data and cyber security arrangements. That’s up from just 15% in 2021.
That is real progress, but even more critical is for care providers to put in to action what the self-assessment has identified.
For example, ensuring that staff are aware of their own responsibilities to keep data safe – and how to spot a potential cyber-attack is absolutely critical. Again, we have seen real progress in this area with over 40,000 views of our free elearning resources on data and cyber security in just six months.
Our local support organisations across the country have seen care providers step up to the mark: ensuring they have good back-up systems in place and know what to do if, for whatever reason, they may lose access to data. And adding data protection and cyber security to their business continuity planning.
We are delighted to see this progress and are committed to providing ongoing support to care providers on this critical issue.
