HOW TO CREATE AN INCLUSIVE WASHROOM

Whether it’s a care home, hospital, shopping centre or school, ensuring washroom

environments are accessible to all is vital. Trudi Osborne, Airdri’s Marketing Manager, explains that innovative, inclusive equipment is key to encouraging people into the washroom.

The washroom is often one of the most frequented parts of a building and it has an important job to do in the fight against bacteria. Ensuring that your washroom promotes healthy hand hygiene is key to preventing the spread of germs and infections; however, surprisingly it seems that not everyone takes this simple measure seriously.

Although it sounds like a straightforward process, hand washing is often overlooked, with many people unaware of the proper procedures to wash and dry their hands effectively. In fact, according to research by The Royal Pharmaceutical Society, 84% of adults in the UK do not wash their hands for long enough to effectively remove germs. Added to this, if people don’t dry their hands properly after washing, bacteria can easily spread amongst damp hands.

Washing hands with water and soap, for at least 20 seconds, and thoroughly drying them before leaving the washroom, is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself, and others, from catching bugs and illnesses.

When it comes to designing or refurbishing the washroom environment, careful consideration should be given to the end user, particularly when selecting equipment and facilities. Here are five top tips to help when it comes to choosing your latest hand drying solutions:

1. First impressions count The washroom says a lot about a company. It’s often the first facility a guest will use when visiting a company’s premises, so ensuring it gives the right impression is vital. An unclean or cluttered washroom can leave a negative impression on the overall business.

As well as maintaining a clean and sanitary environment, consideration should be given to the overall aesthetic of the room. Keep the room light, bright and fresh and keep surfaces streamlined and clutter-free to keep maintenance to a minimum. The new Airdri Air Purifier breaks down unwanted bacteria and attacks odours at their source, ensuring that the washroom always delivers a freshly cleaned scent.

2. Consider the available space Remember to factor in how much space is available in the washroom. If it is limited then slim, wall-mounted products that do not protrude can keep lower-wall and floor space free. Not only does this give the illusion of more space, it also makes the washroom more accessible to those with mobility requirements.

Manoeuvring around bulky equipment can be especially problematic for wheelchair users and those using walking aids. Go for a wall-mounted hand dryer with a slim profile, such as the Airdri Quazar, Quad or Quantum – three of
