Better hygiene through mopping
Chicopee explains how you can ensure better hygiene through complementary floor cleaning methods.
Keeping surfaces and floors clean is a priority for many companies and organisations. And while the traditional and still most common cleaning technique remains wet mopping, research suggests wet cleaning together with dry mopping can actually deliver the best results.
Why go dry?
80% of all dirt in buildings is dust. What might seem like an innocuous substance can actually be dangerous to human health, as dust is a breeding ground for bacteria growth. It may even contain a variety of toxic chemicals such as phthalates, volatile organic compounds, flame retardants and heavy metals. As such, reducing exposure to dust in buildings is critical, particularly in sensitive environments such as hospital wards and clean rooms.
Bacteria need moist, warm temperatures to grow, very similar to those provided by traditional wet mopping. Research shows that wet mopping can actually stimulate the development of micro-organisms including MRSA, because they feed on dust. Research has also concluded that in places where dry cleaning is common practice before wet mopping, a very low MRSA infection rate has been recorded and vice versa for wet mopping.
As it’s often not possible to use electronic cleaning tools in many public areas, particularly during the day, it can be difficult to keep dust and dirt under control. Compounding this is the fact that traditional cotton floor cloths and mops can contain contaminants – even after laundering or rinsing – spreading it onto the next surface, causing cross contamination.
Dry dust mopping offers a simple solution: it can reduce allergens and bacteria build-up, and with disposables there is no risk of cross contamination.
The right pick
Professional cleaning materials brand, Chicopee, offers a range of innovative cleaning solutions, including Stretch ’n Dust Light floor mops, which are ideal for hygiene critical areas where electronic machine cleaning is not possible.
The distinctive orange Stretch ‘n Dust Light mops boast a number of benefits, including its 3D structure. Thanks to the unique oil impregnation and stretch technology, this 3D

structure picks up and holds dust, dirt and hair in the mop, reducing the risk of cross contamination as they can be easily disposed of after use.
Additionally, they are made with fibre from Forest Stewardship Forests (FSC) certified forests to ensure minimal impact and guarantee a healthy way of cleaning.
The versatile floor mops, which can be used together with the ergonomically designed Chicopee Extension Handle or with all leading flat mop systems, can be used on a variety of surfaces and not simply floors.
The right combination
Complementing Chicopee’s dry dust mopping solution is the Microfibre Floor Mops range, created for use with the Chicopee Fluid Mopping System and can be used dry or damp.
Designed for short-term use, the mops act like a magnet by trapping dirt and bacteria. With one product you can first dry dust and dispose of the mop, then use a fresh mop with a removable reservoir (holding up to 620ml of cleaning solution), simply pulling the ergonomic trigger to release liquid during the clean.
The reduction in liquid not only results in up to 80% less water being used, but also chemical consumption is lowered. In addition, cleaning effectiveness is enhanced and time spent on the task in hand is reduced, delivering both cost savings and environmental benefits.
Combining dry and wet mopping will improve hygiene standards by ensuring dirt and bacteria are removed from surfaces along with the risks of cross contamination.
James Taylor, Marketing Director EMEIA – Specialties at BerryGlobal, said: “Traditional cleaning methods frequently fail to deliver the best performance, both in terms of cleaning and hygiene control. Dry dust mopping is a vital step in the cleaning process and, combining it with wet mopping, is not only best practice, but will ensure health and wellbeing, whether you are operating in critical care environment, care facility or clean room.”
