PEOPLE-POWERED
PITCH, RIO DE JANEIRO In 2014, Pavegen’s technology made history as it was used to create the world’s first ever people-powered football pitch in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Partnering with oil giant Shell, Pavegen developed 200 energy-capturing tiles which were installed across the width and breadth of the field. The energy generated from the movement of the players across the pitch was used to power the flood lights.
The pitch was officially opened on the 10th September by international football legend Pelé.

Following the unity and spirit of the World Cup, this project is an incentive to encourage entrepreneurial growth and disruptive behaviour, allowing the community to hone their football skills on the pitch and become part of the energy generating saving process.
Laurence Kemball-Cook said: “Entrepreneurs should know no rules and overcome all barriers. We have taken this idea from a bedroom in London to a football pitch in Brazil through our partnership with Shell, encouraging young innovators of the future to make a real difference in their community.”
