Exploring Amsterdam

Got some spare time while in the Dutch capital? Why not check out some of these intriguing extra-curricular activities outside of Interclean.

A SPOT OF HISTORY

Amsterdam has the highest density of museums in the world. The Museum Quarter (Museumplein) and Vondelpark neighbourhood is one of the most popular parts of the city - despite it being a residential area, it’s home to the fantastic Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk modern art museum, and the recently remodelled Rijksmuseum, famous for Rembrandt’s ‘The Night Watch’ and the works of Vermeer and many others.

Alongside the museums, you also get one-of-a-kind attractions like the House of Bols, the Royal Coster Diamonds tour, and of course there are many beautiful spots for a canal boat tour. You can also always take leisurely ride on a hired cycle through parks and alongside the canals – just be careful of the local riders, as some of them have little patience for sightseers (and even pedestrians).

One of the most important museums in the city is Anne Frank House. If you want to pay a visit to this museum, you will likely need to purchase an online ticket and secure a time slot in advance, due to its popularity and limited size.

If you’re spending an extra few days in Amsterdam, it might be worth looking into the I Amsterdam City Card, which includes free admission to 70 museums and attractions in the region (and discounts to others), as well as unlimited use of GVB public transport in the city (bus, tram and metro services), a free canal cruise, and various discounts at certain restaurants and cafés.

46 | INTERCLEAN AMSTERDAM 2022 GUIDE A TASTE OF CULTURE

For those wanting new and unique experiences can pay a visit to the Oud-West neighbourhood which houses De Hallen. A converted tram depot, it houses arts, crafts, fashion and the impressive Food Hallen, which features around 30 different food and drink vendors.

The city is packed with marvellous and exotic eateries, from De Pannenkoekenboot (an all-you-can-eat pancake boat) to The Garlic Queen, to food trucks that serve raw herring if you’re brave enough. There’s also the Heineken Experience if you get the chance to have a quick tour and pint.

Alongside the endless dining experiences, Amsterdam comes alive at night, with too many excellent drinking spots to single out and, of course, plenty of cafés where you can unwind in a questionable haze. If you fancy a chill there’s the Amsterdam IceBar, where your ticket gets you a rental coat and gloves so you can enjoy a few drinks served in ice glasses in a -10ºC bar – but remember to book your timeslot in advance.

Whether you’re in a pub in the always packed De Wallen red light district, finding fashion in the Nine Streets district, or just striking up conversation in a late-night waffle house, the only thing you’re guaranteed to do in Amsterdam is lose track of time. Don’t forget to set your alarms: the show opens each day at 10AM!
