auction.
Over half (23 lots) is porcelain, mainly Qianlong mark and period monochrome pieces. Some 19th- century and Republican period pieces are also included. Te most important is a blue and white reverse decorated Qianlong mark and period dragon meiping, which had been in the Walter C Koerner Collection and sold at Christie’s London in 1973 and 2006 (est $150/200,000). Two of the five Qianlong mark and period teadust glazed pieces deserve notice. One is a large faceted vase, purchased at Christie’s in London in 2006, and the other is a vase in the form of a fanghu, acquired from Sotheby’s Hong Kong the same year (est $160/180,000 and $120/180,000 respectively). Seven jade carvings and five pieces of lacquer round out the selection.

been both exhibited and published in many museums and books in both the United States and Japan. Te estimate is unpublished, but it is expected to bring over $4,000,000. A Northern-Song/Jin (960-1234), white, ding dish carved with a peony motif which had been at CT Loo in Paris and at Eskenazi Ltd in London, is another exceptional piece (est $400/600,000). A cizhou meiping painted with fish is also extremely rare as there are almost none with fish. Te painting style is very free and simple, appealing to a contemporary sensibility. With a Mayuyama and Ataka Museum provenance, this has also been exhibited and published in Japan (est $500/700,000).

Himalayan Art Thursday, 22 March, 10am 88 lots, $7,100,000-10,100,000
Richard R Ernst and his wife Magdalena travelled to the Himalayan region in 1968 and acquired
their first thangka in
Kathmandu. From Winterthur in Switzerland, he is a Nobel Laureate (for Chemistry in 1991), who specialised in the intersection of chemistry and physics and spent many years researching and later leading the nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy research group at the Laboratorium fur Physikalische Chemie of ETH-Z. He was also a passionate collector of Himalayan art, assembling over 50 years what is arguably one of the finest collections of Himalayan art ever to appear at auction. Ranging from the 12th to 18th centuries, the collection is centred on Tibetan art, with particular emphasis on Buddhist and Bon paintings from Tibet and Nepal.

exhibited worldwide. One of the larger early paintings is a thangka from Tibet, circa 1200, or 13th century, depicting an early Buddhist master. Tese paintings of Tibetan masters helped spread the Buddhist doctrine during the period approximately from 1000-1200. Stylistically they were influenced by the painting tradition of eastern India in the Pala dynasty (circa 750-1199). Tis painting has been published and discussed by scholars Amy Heller, Pratapaditya Pal and David Jackson, most recently in 2011 and was exhibited in Dr Pal’s 2003 exhibition, Himalayas: An Aesthetic Adventure at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC (est $800,000/1,200,000). A 15th-century thangka from is
Tibet a superb depiction of
Guhyasamaja and his consort in the classic style of the period. It is one of the most elegant and beautifully executed 15th century works. Like so many of the thangkas in this collection it has been exhibited more than once,

Qianlong mark and period celadon- glazed relief-decorated bottle vase from John Sparks in London will be on the cover (est $800/1,200,000). Qing porcelain is well represented and includes a group of pieces from well-known London dealer Marchant. A jade highlight is a pair of Qianlong white jade bowls with their original stands, possibly carved from the same piece of stone, which was at Y Tsuruki in Tokyo in 1960 (est $300/500,000). Te collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller will be sold over several days in May at Christie’s New York, and will include their Asian works of art and Chinese export porcelain.
