long hours and constantly struggle to keep your cattle fed. However, you love working on the land and you are your own boss. Profit: 2 beads

Coal Mine: You have tapped into a fairly

new resource that has a high rate of return. You can employ many people for a relatively low wage. However, the work can be

dangerous and often people are killed in accidents at the mine. Profit: 6 beads

Craft Making: You weave baskets and

brooms from reeds growing on the river- bank and sell them around the city. You make enough money to buy produce, but

you also depend on fishing for sustenance and you trade fish for other goods. Profit: 1 bead

Sawmill: There is always a demand

for wood and there seems to be enough wood to keep your company in business for a long time. Profit: 4 beads

Round Two (1920–1960)

Cement Factory: The construction business is booming and your company can barely

keep up with the demand for cement. How- ever, the river sand is being depleted in the area you have been dredging, so you will

have to relocate in order to find more sand. Profit: 5 beads

Furniture Manufacturing: This small

company uses local resources and employs local people.

Profit: 2 beads

Market Vending: Working in the local market, you sell products made in your community. You can sell fruits and

vegetables when they are in season and you use banana leaves to wrap your products. Profit: 1 bead

Produce Farm: As a farmer, you work long hours and are in constant struggle with

weather and insects. It is the only life you have known as you carry on the traditions handed down from your father. Profit: 1 bead
