Welcome

Opposed piston engines have been on the fringes of powertrain development for some time, despite hundreds of patents being fi led for aspects of the technology. Could a new design be about to propel this interesting engine architecture into the spotlight? Jon Lawson was sent to fi nd out - get the full story on page 6. Elsewhere, aerospace takes up a

sizeable chunk of this issue’s pages, and for good reason. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), aviation emissions have grown faster in recent decades than rail, road or shipping, accounting for 2% of global energy-related CO2 emissions in 2022. We evaluate the sector’s current trajectory towards net zero, from innovative aircraft wing designs (page 14) and harnessing the potential of liquid hydrogen fuel (page 26) to strategies for decarbonising fl ight (page 29) and automated composite handling of aerospace components (page 32). As always, electric vehicles (EVs)

also take centre stage. In addition to evaluating the current state-of- play of the EV market as regards policy and regulation (page 20), this issue covers the launch of the UK’s fi rst public hydrogen-powered EV charging points (page 22), the fastest rechargeable battery technology currently on the market (page 24) and explores how spectral analysis can ensure battery quality and performance (page 36). For those looking to extend their

learning of the latest transport trends past these pages, Railtech Europe and the Commercial Vehicle Show are worth a visit – fi nd out what to expect from page 40..
