Loretto Care - Issue 1, December 2016 What happens next?

We want to keep inspiring people to become leaders in their own lives by developing innovative forums, tools and resources.

Our Academy, which opened in 2016 at our headquarters in Lipton House in Glasgow, gives us a perfect platform to bring people together to share and learn.

The Academy, which was formally opened by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, has been designed to encourage learning and discussion among staff at Loretto Care and the people we work for.

With a capacity to host up to 100 people, as well as much smaller groups, the Academy is made up of different learning zones which have been designed to give a relaxed and welcoming feel. It also has special sensory lighting for people who are visually impaired, wide spaces for wheelchair-users and a dementia-friendly colour scheme.

The learning zones, which can be taken apart or moved around for maximum flexibility, include:

• a horseshoe-shaped pod for presentations

• a standing pod where people can draw their thoughts and ideas on white walls

• an online learning suite • two sound proof circular meeting spaces • a corner break-out area designed like a comfortable living room

We will use the Academy and its excellent facilities as we continue to support people on their leadership journeys.

Here we highlight some of the things we’re developing to support people to build their skills and capabilities.

Leadership capabilities focused learning

We are developing learning sessions which will focus on each of the leadership capabilities as identified in the leadership strategy for social services in Scotland. We have already developed our introduction to Step into Leadership open badge and our W.E. Innovate badge. We will build on these to develop sessions which explore each of the leadership capabilities.

New learning framework

We are reviewing our learning and development framework to ensure it is fit for purpose. We want to ensure it reflects and supports our vision and ethos of everyone as leaders.

Innovation hubs

We will develop innovation hubs which will be both virtual and physical in nature. We will create the space and time for staff to think innovatively in their approaches to everyday issues.

The Lens 2

The Lens is a fund set up by the Scottish Government, businesses and charities which gives staff in voluntary sector organisations the chance to pitch for money. It aims to foster an internal culture of innovation and creativity within organisations. We ran a Lens final this year with staff pitching their ideas and five securing cash to roll out their ideas, which included a walking football project, an internet café and a social enterprise which sees people we work for learn bee-keeping skills and then selling the honey by working with Plan Bee. The Lens 2 is now underway.

Excellence in care

We are developing a Centre of Excellence for Care that will have representatives from Loretto Care and external organisations. This will include people we work for and frontline staff. One of the key areas the centre will examine is best practice in leadership, building and improving on the work done to date.
