Record volumes,

strong service continue at Port of Virginia

The Port of Virginia® in April

set a new record for monthly TEU volume having handled more than 286,000 units. “We prepared our operations

for the expected surge of volumes from the Suez incident and our team did not miss a beat processing the cargo,” said Stephen A. Edwards, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority. “Our service metrics in April were equal to or better than March, with an improvement in our berth productivity and gate turn times. This demonstrates the capability of our modern terminals and the value of our increasing capacity as we maintained and improved service levels”. In March and April the port added 20 new hybrid shuttle

trucks. This equipment builds capacity while reducing emissions and improving the overall sustainability of the operation. In addition,

the port has

added 500 new chassis to its chassis pool, Hampton Roads Chassis Pool II (HRCPII). “The strong volumes will be

ongoing in May and June and we are continuing to add new equipment to the operation to meet demand,” Edwards said. “We’re supporting the berth operation with new hybrid shuttle trucks and are investing in HRCPII to ensure that we’re providing motor carriers with new, road-ready chassis.

These investments

help drive sustainability, fluidity, productivity and efficiency.”

LATAM confirms expansion of its cargo fleet up to 21 B767 planes in 2023

LATAM Group announced the expansion of its freighter fleet growth under which it now plans to add 10 Boeing 767-300 Boeing Converted Freighters over the next three years. This will bring the fleet size to up to 21 freighters by 2023. The first aircraſt will be expected to begin operations in December 2021. The Group’s freighter fleet

growth plan initially included four firm conversion orders with Boeing and another four conversion options. Two months aſter the initial announcement, LATAM has exercised the four options, eight planes, and the conversion of two additional Boeing 767- 300ERs. This means that the freighter fleet will be comprised of up to 21 aircraſt by the end of

2023. Upon completion of the plan the Group will have almost doubled its freighter capacity as well as reduced the average fleet age from 17 to 14 years. “The decision to our

expand fleet is based

on the attractive growth opportunities available, recent efficiency improvements and flexibility that the Boeing 767F freighter offers. Thanks to these elements we believe we will grow profitably, even if facing conditions similar to those that we faced before the pandemic. This expansion will allow LATAM’s cargo subsidiaries to continue responding to our customers’ needs and supporting the region’s economic growth through in cr eas ed and improved

Oakland has passed the 100,000-box milestone for imports in a month. “We’re sounding like

a broken record, but containerized trade continues to flourish as the U.S. economy rebounds,” said Port Maritime Director Bryan Brandes. “And as we’ve said before, there doesn’t seem to

be a letup in sight.” Oakland officials said April

import volume increased 25% from the same month a year ago. It was the third consecutive month of import gains, and the second straight record month, they said. Import volume year-to-date has increased 19%. The port said consumer

spending continues to drive trade growth. To meet demand, US retailers and e-commerce distributors are importing goods from Asian manufacturers at unprecedented levels. Asia is Oakland’s No. 1 trade partner. Oakland said its April

manufacturers needed empty boxes to transport record US imports; shipping lines sent large numbers of empties from the US to Asia to meet demand; empties leaving the US took vessel space from USexports intended for Asian markets. The port said its total
