Tuesday, June 15 and then join San Diego Pride, Women’s Film Festival San Diego and Women’s Museum of California Thursday, June 24 at 7 p.m. for a live virtual conversation moderated by Lee Ann Kim with director Megan Rossman. “Our history was disappearing as
quickly as we were making it.” With that realization, Deborah
Edel and Joan Nestle co-founded the Lesbian Herstory Archives, the world’s largest collection of materials by and about lesbians. For more than 40 years, through many of the major milestones in LGBTQ history, the all-volunteer organization has literally rescued history from the trash. Now the co-founders are in their mid-70s, and the group faces a number of challenges: A transfer of leadership. The rise of digital technology. A renewed call to activism in a politically charged moment. The Archivettes is a documentary film that explores how this group came together to combat lesbian invisibility and create “a place that says yes.”

For the first time, LA Pride will partner with the most popular outdoor film organization in Southern California, Cinespia, for their LGBTQ Pride Movie Night at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Saturday, June 26. “It was always our intention to offer our
community opportunities to safely celebrate Pride together in accordance with safety guidelines by both the CDC and Los Angeles County,” said Sharon-Franklin Brown, Christopher Street West board president. “We know our community wants to be together, and we want to do everything we can to create these moments. This is why we’re providing other larger capacity, outdoor entertainment for all ages of our community.”

Santa Monica will offer a monthlong art walk that safely celebrates the
city’s inclusive and diverse spirit, with a focus on family-friendly displays and activities that can be enjoyed at your leisure. The Rainbow Road Art Walk, on display Thursday, June 3 through
Wednesday, June 30, exclusively features the creations of LGBTQ visual artists. It will span across the Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica Place and Santa Monica Pier. The art walk is a dynamic collection of murals, photo installations, inter-
active and multimedia works from over a dozen innovative artists and artist groups local to Southern California. Featured artists include Annie Hong, aka Hootnannie, whose piece “Where Will U Take You” will be on display at Santa Monica Place. Very Gay Paint, the beloved painting duo comprised of LA comedians Nicholas Scheppard and Jenson Titus will apply their evocative colorplay to the Santa Monica Pier for a “Very Gay Mural.” “The Mothers of Pride Pearly Gateway” interactive installation on the
Third Street Promenade by gender fluid Afro-Indigenous artist Grey references indigenous ideology that considers queer beings to be sacred gatekeepers between this world and the rest. Visitors will be invited to
stand beneath the playful arch, contemplating how spiritual iconography resonates within LGBTQ community and expressing gratitude for the leaders who made Pride possible. The queer, women of color owned and operated floral studio in Los
Angeles, UnderNewMGMT, in collaboration with ShakesTheArtist, will present “Protest and Pageantry,” a 3-D multimedia floral installation on the Third Street Promenade. Inspired by trans performers turned activists, this piece is both a celebration of iconic trans People of Color performers (such as Marsha P. Johnson, Sir Lady Java, Sylvia Rivera) and a tribute to the numerous trans lives lost to violence. Spanish-born artist and designer Yaicecream and LA illustrator Jeromy
Velasco will join forces for a collaborative 3-D mixed-media installation titled “Chosen Family.” Depicting a floating dance floor over the Los Angeles skyline, the piece serves to evoke the ways in which chosen families can be an important method of survival and source of support for members of the LGBTQ community. The interactive piece encourages viewers to engage with the imagery and take a photo with their chosen family and loved ones.
