Move Intermodal (formerly Ewals CargoCare) and Hupac have launched a rail and sea service from the UK and Benelux to Istanbul’s Halkali terminal on the eastern bank of the Bosporus. It uses a train service from Moerdijk via Geleen and Vienna, with sea connections from London Thamesport, Immingham, Teesport and Blyth.
Hauliers travelling to France that have spent less than 48 hours in the UK no longer require a Covid-19 test prior to departure but those that do require a test must ensure they take one before arriving in Kent in order to avoid delays, reports the port of Dover. All hauliers must also take a border readiness check prior to arrival. The move means that truckers can travel direct to the Channel ports without diverting via the Manston Airport holding site. Shippers and forwarders protest over Alpine truck restrictions
European forwarders’ association CLECAT and the European Shippers’ Council (ESC) have written to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen calling for uninterrupted movement of goods over the Alps, particularly over the heavily restricted Brenner Pass. They say that shippers and
forwarders are concerned at the ever-increasing driving bans on trucks through the Tyrol region in Austria which were further extended at the beginning of 2021 with a stricter night driving ban, removal of exemptions for Euro VI trucks on the A12 Inntal Autobahn and for Euro V trucks through Tyrol during the day. Freightliner and Pentalver owner Genesee & Wyoming has appointed Eddie Aston as UK/Europe Region chief executive. The region employs 3,100 people in the UK and continental Europe and comprises the Freightliner operations in the UK and Poland, container logistics provider Pentalver and train operator Rotterdam Rail Feeding. Aston’s career includes 13 years at DHL, and also has served as UK, Ireland and Nordics managing director at Ceva Logistics. He succeeds Gary Long, who is moving back to the US as planned.
GB Railfreight has started a rail service between the Port of Felixstowe and Maritime Transport’s Wakefi eld Europort terminal. Operating from Monday to Friday, the train is made up of a mix of wagon types to allow for enhanced fl exibility and to maximise the number of boxes that can be carried. Maritime Transport and DB Cargo will also start another new rail service from Felixstowe, to East Midlands Gateway. It will run Tuesday to Saturday.
There is still an alarming shortage of drivers worldwide, despite reduced demand due to Covid-19, says the International Road Transport Union in its latest report. Surveying 800 road transport companies from over 20 countries, IRU found that the shortage was most acute in Eurasia, where last year 20% of driver positions were not fi lled. China was the least aff ected country in 2020 with only 4% of jobs open. Elsewhere, the driver shortage was less serious in 2020 than 2019 due to the pandemic. In Europe, unfi lled driver positions fell by around three quarters, from 24% to 7%. Transport companies however expected driver shortages to intensify again in 2021 as economies recover and demand for transport services increases.
Immingham-based intermodal and international haulier Brit- Pol has received a £2.5m funding facility from Bibby Financial Services. The invoice discounting facility will enable the business to extend its export and import markets, strengthen its fl eet and establish a new offi ce in Poland, with the aim of doubling income in the next 12 months.
