We can only imagine the difference if there were none available to be bought in the local community - there would be no choice but to find longer lasting alternatives, with limited or no coastal environment impact, which would be fantastic.’’
‘’The decision to not sell these in demand items carries a financial cost to us as a business’’ stated Matt John, partner at Saunton Surf hire. ‘’We firmly believe in helping customers opt for more sustainable options. Since working with Plastic Free North Devon on their ‘Protect our Playground’ pilot wooden bellyboard hire project we have seen a huge interest in the wooden alternatives. We are confident we will see interest in this scheme grow’’
Saunton Beach is the first beach to commit to not selling cheap polystyrene bodyboards. With Westward Ho! confirming their village wide ban, the campaign focus will now shift to the other villages across northern Devon and the UK.
“The campaign is now getting real momentum”, stated Andrew Cross, Campaign Lead. “The effort northern Devon business owners have shown so far is truly inspiring. These business owners are putting planet before profit”.
