Policy & Compliance Asia Pacific-based airlines registered a 15.2%

year-on-year fall in demand last year. Capacity decreased by 27.4%. IATA observed: “After a pause in the recovery

in Q3 [2020], seasonally affected CTK accelerated in recent months, driven by the rebound in manufacturing activity and export orders, notably from China and South Korea.” Latin America-based carriers faced a 21.3%

year-on-year decrease in demand. Capacity declined by 35%. “The under-performance is explained by

difficult economic conditions in markets such as Mexico, Argentina and Peru,” IATA said. “The capacity crunch is also stringent in that region.” Cargo demand for North America-based

airlines climbed by 1.1% year on year. Capacity decreased by 15.9%. Airlines based in the Middle East experienced

a year-on-year drop in demand of 9.5%. Capacity in the region declined by 20.9%. Industry-wide, there was a large slump in

aircargo demand in the last two months of 2020. In November it declined by 6.2%, and in December by 0.5% compared with the equivalent months in 2019.

December figures Meanwhile, airfreight capacity in December declined by 17.7% year on year, while the air cargo load factor rose by 9.9 ppts to a new all- time-high for the month (57.3%). Looking at regional performance in December,

the region that experienced the largest growth in demand was North America, which posted a 10.7% year-on-year increase. IATA noted that this was “the strongest

monthly performance since late 2018”. Meanwhile, capacity decreased by 9.9%. “Strong traffic on the Asia-North America

routes, which was up 2.1% in 2020, contributed to the performance, driven by strong demand from North American consumers for goods manufactured in Asia,” IATA explained. Middle East-based airlines posted a year-on-

year growth in volumes of 2.2%. Capacity in the region decreased by 18.3%. Africa-based carriers also experienced an

increase in demand in December — of 5.4%, while capacity declined by 23.1%. Europe-based carriers experienced a year-on-

year decline in demand of 5.4%, while capacity decreased by 19.6%. Asia Pacific-based airlines posted a 5.6%

year-on-year decline in volumes, while capacity slid 21.9%. Latin America-based carriers saw a decline of

16.6% year on year, “in line with the outcome of November”, while capacity declined by 29.7%.

Transaid’s Uganda team launches COVID-19 response programme

Transaid is helping to roll out driver-specific safety advice and equipment – making a big difference to the lives of truck drivers in Africa

Transaid launched a COVID-19 response programme in June 2020 to support heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers, supported by the Employment and Skills for Development in Africa (E4D) Programme. Working with local partners, Transaid is helping to roll out driver-specific safety advice and provide hand-washing facilities, cab sanitisation materials and personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep drivers safe, reduce transmission rates and build community confidence in the safety of the logistics sector.

Emmanuel’s story

Emmanuel Zambo is a Congolese driver who has been driving long distance for over seven years. He says that truck driving has always been a tough job as it involves a lot of risks, but he likes his job as driving is his passion. However, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic has made his job immensely challenging. Emmanuel found himself having to drive for longer periods of time as fewer rest points were available.

Earlier in the year, he was shunned by the community as every truck driver was considered to have the virus. His biggest

challenge, however, is the fear the he could contract the virus anytime and die, leaving no one to support his family. Emmanuel received a COVID-19 kit from the Malaba border team working on the programme. He had been using the items for two weeks before he met the team in Pakwach. Commenting on how beneficial the PPE had

been, he said: “The jerrican and soap have been very helpful as I can wash my hands as often as I need to. I also use the water for drinking. Storing drinking water has been a problem for many of us. We would mostly buy bottled water before, which is expensive, but also not easy to buy due to fewer stopping points.” The field officers working on the response

were encouraged to hear that they are making a difference for drivers.

BIFA Awards “Congratulations from Transaid to all of those who won and were nominated for BIFA Freight Service Awards. We were proud to have the opportunity to present the Specialist Services Award, it was a great event.” You can still donate £10 to the work of Transaid – text transaidnoinfo to 70450.
