Paul Dawson (14 August 1964-10 February 2021) A

nybody who had the privilege of meeting Paul would have found him a larger than life character, generous in many ways, with his knowledge, advice and affection.

He started his coin life with his father Brian, who also sadly died early this year, as his mentor and teacher, a

good start for any young coin dealer. When Brian retired Paul took over the family business in Bolton, and during this time he was DNW’s very successful representative in the North of England. It didn’t take long for him to come to the notice of the house of Spink, where he was appointed head of their coin department. During this period he came into his own. His natural joie de vivre and bonhomie helped him make many friends with collectors and dealers alike, always fair and reasonable. It was not for nothing that he became known as a ‘dealer’s dealer’, a moniker afforded to very few. David Guest, now of CNG, joined Spink at roughly the same time, and Paul took him under his wing. Paul and his then partner Heather were involved in a terrible car crash in June 2011. Tragically she didn’t survive; Paul did, but unfortunately very badly injured and his eyesight was seriously affected. In due course this finished his career at Spink, although he continued to trade for a few years from his shop in the city of York’s well-known and picturesque Shambles. Apart from coins, he had many passions: golf, almost a scratch player at his peak; football, a Manchester City season ticket holder; horse racing, he owned a few winners in his time and formed the best collection of British horse racing tickets and passes ever put together (DNW 138, 12 December 2016); and a love of good wine and food.

Paul was one of the great players in his chosen game of numismatics and he will be hugely missed. - C.A.W
