James Washington (1828 - 1905) BY ANGELA JONES

During African American

History Month, I challenge every African American to spend some time researching their roots. Although the best records were not kept on people of color who lived during slavery, my family was able to trace our roots almost to the 1600s in the United States. One relative was born in 1710; before the Revolutionary War. My grandmother’s great

grandparents, James Washington (1828 - 1905) and Dolly Washington (1833 - 1880) lived in South Carolina and had 20 children. Dolly’s mother was Sallie Suber, who also lived in South Carolina with her husband. South Carolina

death certificate for a brother of my grandmother’s, who I do not believe she was aware of before she passed. He died as a child before my grandmother was born. I have

documented many branches of our family tree. My sisters and aunts have also worked tirelessly to uncover the family history that we thought we would never know. They discovered that our family owned a large swath of land that was used for farming and they owned a mill, as well. We also know that the grandmother of my grandfather, who was born in Georgia, was 100% Cherokee and she is listed in government such.

history, they feel a sense of belonging that no one can ever take away. More than likely, most African Americans had family members living in what is now called the United States of America long before most European immigrants. We belong here and we must make sure that our children are aware of that fact! I am truly thankful for the knowledge of my family's history.

planned for the design challenge for the Black History Month Collection of 2021, which was to propose creative ideas for the collection, they asked HBCU students to contribute. I was very confident in my design, but you obviously never know if you’re going to win or not. When I did win, I was very surprised. I rejoiced! I called my mom and it was an exciting moment for me,” said Timmons. “I’ve been drawing and doing creative things since I was a child. I feel like I’ve been creatively inclined to think differently than most people. I think that translates into me being an artist. When I got to college, I wanted to continue the passion by majoring in graphic design.” Timmons is currently working as a Freelance Graphic Designer and an Art Department Production Assistant for Stalwart Productions in Richmond, Va.
