FRANCE, Ballons Dirigéables, 1885, a bronze medal by H.A.J. Patey, figure of Science pointing to airship flying at Chalais-Meudon, rev. Dædalus strapping wings to Icarus, 72mm (PBE 660; CGMP p.300; BDM IV, 426; Malpas –; Button 19; cf. DNW 157, 1414). Very fine

In 1884 Charles Renard and Arthur C. Krebs, inventors and military officers in the French Army Corps of Engineers, built an elongated balloon, La France, which was the first airship that could return to its starting point in a light wind. It was 165 feet long, its maximum diameter was 27 feet, and it had a capacity of 66,000 cubic feet. It was propelled by a 7.5hp battery-powered electric motor which drove a 23-foot four-bladed wooden tractor propeller. La France made seven flights in all, the first on 9 August 1884

FRANCE, Union Franco-Américaine, 1886 [struck 1896], a bronze award medal by L.-O. Roty, winged Genius in Phrygian cap conducting a boat in which robed females representing France and America regard the Statue of Liberty, rev. bust of Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi in medallion, flanked by shields and laurel branch, tablet below, un-named, 68mm (Maier 92; Roty Compagnonnage p.94; CGMP p.358; ANS Exh. Cat. 1910, p.271, 80; Coll. R. Marx 13; BDM V, 230; cf. Baldwin 95, 2830). Good very fine

The Union Franco-Americaine was established to oversee the gift of the Statue of Liberty, which was sculpted by Bartholdi and engineered by Gustave Eiffel. The opening ceremony was held on 28 October 1886. Roty’s design first appeared in 1890 but it was not until 1896, and the 10th anniversary of the statue, that the Monnaie struck these medals
