Know your bugs

No-one likes to admit to a bed bug infestation but when it does occur, make sure you can offer your customers an easy-to-use solution with a mix of consumables from Zero In.

BED BUGS

Signs: Bites to the skin, mainly around the ankles or exposed areas whilst sleeping. Dark or rusty spots of bed bug excrement on sheets, mattresses and bed clothes. A musty odour from the bugs’ scent glands.

Causes: Bed bugs are not necessarily related to uncleanliness but a result of lifestyle with many bed bugs hitch-hiking from place to place via luggage, clothing and belongings.

Prevention: Repair cracks in walls and remove clutter where bed bugs may hide. Vacuum carpets and mattresses regularly and along skirting boards. Use monitoring traps to identify infestations early.

Treatment: Apply chemical insecticide solutions, sprays and powders where activity has been seen or monitored.

CARPET BEETLES

Signs: Damage to carpets and fabric along with faecal pellets and shedded skin. Visible signs of adult beetles and their larvae.

Causes: Carpet beetles are attracted to light and may come from outside where they feed on pollen and nectar. Wool carpets and oriental fabrics are common targets. They can also be found in old carpets and underlay.

Prevention: Secure potential entry points (chimneys, eaves, vents, windows) and regularly vacuum carpets and along skirting. Inspect and clean any used carpets/rugs before siting in the home.

Treatment: Apply chemical insecticide traps and sprays in areas where activity has been seen or monitored. Wash/steam clean fabrics that may have been affected.

WOODWORM

Signs: New round/oval holes appearing in wood. Visible signs of bore dust (wood dust) and crumbling wood.

Causes: Woodworm, especially their larvae, are attracted to damp or wet conditions as they can easily digest wood with a high moisture content.

Prevention: Investigate and solve any possible damp issues. Improve ventilation in all rooms to help dry out damp areas.

Treatment: Apply chemical insecticide solution directly onto affected areas and monitor. If possible, isolate the affected item(s) whilst treating to prevent the infestation from spreading. In extreme circumstances it is advised the affected wood is removed and replaced.
