Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (ARC) – winter activities

ARC run a large number of events every year to inform, interest and

involve the next generation in conservation of wildlife. This mission is now more important than ever before.

Over the last few months their natural spaces have been a sanctuary not just to wildlife but to hundreds of thousands of visitors who have made the most of the countryside during the lockdown period. They

are delighted that people have been enjoying these spaces and want to ensure that these places are valued and have

designed a programme of events that support both wildlife and wellness this winter.

Nurture Nature Sundays - The Nurture Nature Sundays have been put together for groups of families and friends who want to support local

wildlife whilst learning all about it too. The day begins with practical tasks such as litter picking, ‘bracken bashing’ or using hand tools to remove

invasive birch and pine. (Children must be supervised at all times). After lunch, the day will finish with some fun and games.

Walks - These guided walks will explore heathland nature reserves,

learning about the plants and animals. These walks are tailored to suit the group, all ages and abilities welcome.

Talks - Their talks will teach you about UK snakes, how to recognise

different types and some fun facts about them. Talks are adapted for each age group. (These talks are delivered via Microsoft Teams or Zoom and you will be asked to provide the link).

All the above events are also adaptable for schools, guides, brownies,

scouts, cubs, etc. and even adult community groups. Each event will be tailored to comply with the latest social distancing guidelines. Places are starting to fill. For more information or to make a booking please email Owain on Education.Officer@arc-trust.org

These events are Free of Charge. Funding has been provided by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the Snakes in the Heather project.

Anti-Bullying Week 2020: United Against Bullying - 16th to 20th November

Anti-Bullying Week is back in November and will start with Odd Socks Day on Monday 16th.

This year's 'Manifesto For Change' sets out the following aims:

“Bullying has a long lasting effect on those who experience and witness it. But by channelling our collective power, through shared efforts and shared ambitions, we can reduce bullying together. From parents and carers, to teachers and politicians, to children and young people, we all have a part to play in coming together to make a difference.”

The official website is full of lots of useful resources such as a toolkit for parents and carers, resources for getting involved online and school tools including films and cross curricular activity ideas.

You can also find out more about Odd Sock Day, supported by children’s TV star Andy Day and his band Andy and the Odd Socks.
