TEVA LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE MIGRAINE TREATMENT

Teva UK Limited has launched a pre- filled pen for AJOVY® (fremanezumab) injection. This format will give patients on AJOVY® added convenience and flexibility not previously available with the AJOVY® pre-filled syringe.

Indicated for the prevention of migraine in adults, who have at least four migraine days per month, AJOVY® offers quarterly and monthly dosing options. Within NHS Scotland, it is accepted for restricted use by the Scottish Medicine Consortium (SMC) for chronic and episodic migraine and is an option for migraine patients, who have not responded to at least three prior preventive treatments.

AJOVY® belongs to a class of treatments called anti-CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) monoclonal antibodies, which have been specifically designed to target the underlying causes of migraine. AJOVY® is the only long-acting anti- CGRP injection with the option of dosing four times or twelve times per year using either a pre-filled syringe or the new pre-filled pen.

Pharmacy First With the launch of NHS Pharmacy First, community pharmacies in Scotland are once again in the spotlight for all the right reasons. know members have been waiting since last year to make a start on this service, which aims to improve access to NHS care, reduces pressure on GPs and reinforces community pharmacy’s place as a key component of the healthcare system in Scotland.

The new AJOVY® pre-filled pen has several features that make it easy-to- use including a button-free, push-down mechanism, audible cues that signal progress of administration, and a window that displays when the dose has been delivered.[iv]

Additionally, the pre-filled pen is for one-time use only and locks after use. AJOVY® can be injected into areas of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm that are not tender, bruised, red or indurated. Injection sites should be alternated/rotated.

SMC ENABLES ACCESS TO KYOWA KIRIN'S CRYSVITA

Crysvita (burosumab) will now be available in the NHS in Scotland for the treatment of X-linked hypophosphataemia (XLH) in children with radiographic evidence of bone disease, who are aged one year and older and adolescent with growing skeletons.

XLH is usually first observed in infants and is characterised by bowed or bent legs, a short stature, bone pain and delayed walking. It is caused by low levels of phosphate in the blood, and results in life-long physical disabilities.

Kyowa Kirin’s drug is the first treatment to target the underlying cause of XLH – Crysvita is an anti- FGF23 monoclonal antibody (mAb).

It works by blocking the FGF23 protein, which restores phosphate

blood levels by reducing its loss via the kidneys and increasing the production of vitamin D, which improves intestinal absorption of phosphate and calcium.

‘This is important news for children and young adults with XLH in Scotland, who will now be able to benefit from Crysvita,’ said Oliver Gardiner, founder and trustee of XLH UK.

‘Access to a treatment that tackles the underlying mechanism and has the potential to avoid or mitigate substantial physical and emotional challenges, will truly make a difference to the lives of people with XLH and their families,’ he added.

The NPA SOP describes the process to be followed by the pharmacy team when providing NHS PFS service. This includes how the pharmacy needs to prepare for the service, what the patient eligibility criteria are, the importance of getting patient consent, gathering other required information, and what the service outcomes are. The SOP has a useful flowchart summary and is amendable for your pharmacy processes.

Coronavirus Jason Leitch, Scotland’s National Clinical Director of Healthcare Quality and Strategy, presented some sobering coronavirus statistics at an NPA conference in July. Don’t forget that the NPA’s coronavirus information hub is continually being updated.

Administrative tasks can take many forms – NHS paperwork, local authority requirements, health and safety regulations, pharmacy professional regulation, compliance with employment law, audits, Government initiatives, and so on. NPA Members have regularly fed back the challenge they face in remembering and coordinating all of the administrative activities they need to undertake and are understandably concerned that they may forget an important task. This ‘Administrative Activity Planner’ has been designed to help members manage this challenge and has been created by studying the requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council, NHS Scotland and other stakeholders. The planner has been put together by looking at the requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council and other key administrative requirements for 2019/2020.

NPA ‘coronacasts’ Have you been listening to the NPA’s podcasts in which we explore issues of pharmacy policy and practice with policy makers and politicians in the context of COVID- 19? In a recent episode about ‘tech and the human touch in healthcare’, I described the recent experience of NHS Near Me in Scotland, which now appears to be attracting

When I meet members around the country, the same issue keeps popping up – workforce shortages. Like all the pharmacy sectors, community pharmacy is also facing a workforce shortage, although it is geographically variable. Some areas find it harder to recruit than others. The NPA is part of a working group to develop resources on promoting community pharmacy as a career choice, with roles not just for pharmacists but for the whole pharmacy team. Scottish Forums NPA Scottish forums will be taking place in September and November. The session, which will be done virtually, will provide an opportunity to discuss current Scottish pharmacy practice with other contractors and members of the NPA team. The forum provides a useful platform to gain information and discuss what matters to independent community pharmacy. If you would like to register please email at j.oman@npa.co.uk.

Ask Your Pharmacist Week 2-9 November The theme of this year’s Ask Your Pharmacist Week will be ‘Your local pharmacy in the NHS family’. It will run from 2-9 November and, as usual, aims both to raise awareness of pharmacy services and to prompt conversations with stakeholders about community pharmacy’s role and benefits.

With the introduction of the pharmacy inspections website, members of the public can easily find information about the pharmacies they use. They can also see how well a pharmacy is performing against five principles which include governance, staff, premises, services and equipment and facilities. The site also features an online ‘knowledge hub’ for the pharmacy team, with examples of excellent, good and poor practice identified through pharmacy inspections. The GPhC analysis shows that investing in staff is a key driver of performance against the standards. The NPA offers flexible learning options to suit training needs. Go to www.npa.co.uk/ learning-and-development for more information, or call me on 07538 192588 to discuss any concerns and how to best prepare for an inspection.
