Millett FPL 2008, 104). Very fine and extremely rare; believed only one other specimen known Provenance: Bt T. Millett March 2009.

ST JAMES’S, The Constitutional Club, Life Member, oval brass, legend, rev. arms and supporters, 50 x 40mm, 26.25g (W –). Good very fine; pierced for suspension Provenance: Gift of P.D.S. Waddell October 2005.

The Constitutional Club, always closely allied to the Conservative party, was founded in 1883, and until 1959 was based at 28 Northumberland avenue. Later it occupied rooms, firstly in the Junior Carlton Club and then the United Services Club, before acquiring premises of its own on the corner of St. James's street and Pall Mall. By the mid-1970s membership had dwindled to under 1,000 and it closed in 1979

ST JAMES’S, Union Club, 1799, copper, clasped hands, UNION CLUB above, date below, rev. heart, 34mm, 11.96g (W 1773; D & W 194/740). Good very fine, very rare Provenance: Bt S.H. Monks October 2014.

The Union Club, founded in 1799 ‘when the Union of the Parliament of England and Ireland was in agitation’ met at Cumberland House, Pall Mall, the former residence of the Duke of Cumberland. Early members were the Dukes of Bedford and Norfolk, Charles Fox, Sir Francis Burdett and the theatrical impresario Richard Sheridan. In subsequent years the Club was based in St James’s square, Regent street, Cockspur street and finally at 10-11 Carlton House terrace. It closed in 1964 and its membership admitted to the United Services Club
