The Seeds – Pushin’ Too Hard – Original Soundtrack (Big Beat) This CD features songs from the acclaimed rockumentary The Seeds - Pushin’ Too Hard, including classics, rarities and previously unreleased tracks. The Seeds, from Los Angeles, remain one of the most iconic American rock bands of the 1960s.Their powerful legacy has only grown in ensuing decades, wielding notable influence on several generations of musicians. Their admirers include Iggy Pop, Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys and the Bangles.

Pushin’ Too Hard is an extensive two-hour trip through the career of this garage band quartet and its eccentric frontman, Sky Saxon. This soundtrack to the documentary provides an opportunity to appreciate the relentless drive of the band in their heyday.

Top tracks include: Can’t Seem To Make You Mine; Mr Farmer; The Wind Blows Your Hair; Satisfy You; Pushin’ Too Hard; and Tripmaker – performed live at the Hollywood Bowl.

On the Detroit Beat! Motor City Soul –UK Style 1963-1967 (ACE)

It may seem hard to believe now, but there was a time when Motown was not a household name on the UK music scene. Around 40 Tamla Motown singles were released here between 1959 and 1964, not one making a dent on our charts until Mary Wells scored a top ten hit with My Guy. After that, Berry Gordy’s iconic record company began to slowly make a greater impression on British pop fans, but even then a full three years went by before Motown’s flagship acts routinely made the UK Top twenty.

However, although ignored by the public at large, Motown songs were adored by British singers and bands, particularly after The Beatles recorded four Motown songs on their second album and soon all manner of artists followed their example. The Motown sound was near impossible to replicate, so most who covered these songs went their own way with them.

Here on this fascinating CD are two dozen of those British cover versions.

Amongst the best are: Mickey’s Monkey (The Hollies); As Long As I Know He’s Mine (Julie Grant); Money (Undertakers); Sweet Thing (Georgie Fame); I’ll Be Doggone (Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas); You Really Got A Hold On Me (The Small Faces); The Way You Do The Things You Do (Elkie Brooks); You’re My Rem- edy (Helen Shapiro); and Shotgun (Cilla Black and Sounds Incorporated). Best of all though is Every Lit- tle Bit Hurts By The Spencer Davis Group, featuring a fabulous lead vocal from my old friend Stevie Winwood.
