Involve Employees in Problem Solving Come to ASCA 2020 Conference & Expo and learn how to engage staff in addressing everyday challenges BY JANIE KINSEY, RN, CASC
As leaders in the ASC community, we are famil- iar with wearing multiple hats and fielding myriad problems every day. We
continuously monitor for upcom- ing changes in the regulations and expectations placed upon us from the multitude of agencies that play a part in the work we do every day. Then, as the changes unfold, we scramble to formulate answers and responses to fulfill each requirement. I invite you to think back to a time when you were not the leader. Consider a time when someone you reported to was engineering the answers to prob- lems that impacted your work every day. How well did those solutions fit into your workflow? Did they create two more problems while supporting the new requirement? How did that impact your satisfaction with your supervisor? Your employer? Your career? Join me during “Engaging Employ- ees to Help Solve Problems” at the ASCA 2020 Conference & Expo, May 13–16, in Orlando, Florida, to discuss how to turn the source of many dilem- mas into results. As a new leader, I was lulled into
believing that because I had done nearly every job within a surgery center, I would magically have the answers to all of the challenges present in manag- ing a surgery center. After a few colos- sal failures and significant reflection on what I knew about people, I decided to try a different strategy. I consid- ered the question that had often risen in my mind as a staff nurse: “Did they ever consider asking us if this would work?” This started with me respond- ing to employees, physicians or ven- dors presenting problems by asking if they could visualize a solution.
Harnessing the creativity and practicality of the ones who will be living and breathing the solutions, revisions and corrections we all implement every day opens a whole new world of potential.”

Harnessing the creativity and prac- ticality of the ones who will be liv- ing and breathing the solutions, revi- sions and corrections we all implement every day opens a whole new world of potential. Not only do your employees
buy into the changes that are mandated, they feel a sense of empowerment and significance due to their contributions. In an environment where demands are made of us to provide growth potential to our staff and advocate for our cen- ters and the industry, we need to use every resource in our arsenal. Your employees hold the key to concerns ranging from human resources to accreditation surveys. Promote their knowledge of your process and capitalize on the creativ- ity of working together.
