Lucideon publishes its 2020 training schedule for ceramic whitewares & refractories

Lucideon has announced the launch of its 2020 schedule of ceramic whitewares and refractories training which includes 16 ceramic modules for the tableware, sanitaryware, tile and retail sectors, and 6 refractory based modules.

Scheduled training modules are held at Lucideon's headquarters in Stoke- on-Trent, UK, with the option of on-site training for those who prefer a flexible and customized approach. Alternatively, there is the option of training by webinar, which is available for all ceramics based modules.

Caroline Mullington, technology partnership manager, said:

“Our many decades of experience in the ceramics sector means we can offer specialized training modules including raw materials, individual manufacturing processes, and testing, which will be of interest to anyone employed in the ceramics sector.

“We know that learning and development is an important investment for organisations to grow, retain and upskill teams which is why we develop our training according to the needs of our clients.“

Lucideon has a team of highly experienced trainers who have industry experience across a number of ceramics and refractories sectors.

January 2020 sees the new schedule commence with L1, Understanding Ceramics and R1, Refractory Fundamentals – Composition and Usage. L1 will focus on the unique features and materials in ceramics, as well as the various manufacturing processes involved. R1 will look at the basic building blocks that make up the structure of a refractory material, where they are used and how they are made.

Buying process for British Steel is back on the front burner

The future of British Steel has been thrown into doubt following news that the British Government, which is currently running the business, has failed to agree terms with the Turkish company Ataer Holding. As a result, the exclusivity given to Ataer has now been lifted and the process of finding a buyer for the beleagured steelmaker is open to bidders.

British Steel was put into compulsory liquidation back in May after rescue talks between the government and the steelmaker's private equity owner, Greybull Capital, broke down and there was a very real prospect of 5,000 jobs being directly at risk, along with a further 20,000 in the supply chain.

According to a report by the BBC, Ataer owns almost 50% of Erdemir, Turkey's biggest steel producer, and is also the investment vehicle of Oyak, the Turkish Armed Forces Assistance Fund, which is basically the pension fund for the armed forces.

Following US President Trump's recent decision to pull-out from Northern Syria – and Turkey's subsequent 'military crossing' or invasion of Kurdish- held parts of the region – the British Government has voiced concerns about Ataer's links with the Turkish Government and opened up to other interested parties.

One big UK player and contender is Sanjeev Gupta's Liberty House. The company already owns steelmaking facilities in Rotherham and Stocksbridge in South Yorkshire, UK where it employs 5,500 people across 30 sites.

Other potential buyers include the Chinese company Jingye.

A quick sale is need, according to the Official Receiver and local Labour MP Nic Dakin says that British Steel is a strong business, 'which is reflected by the continued interest of a number of parties in buying British Steel'.

and complies with all new Government approved training standards, funding and assessment plans.

Rick Franckeiss, Group Training Manager at Sheffield Forgemasters, said: “It is always exciting to welcome these forward thinking individuals to our company and we look forward to helping them establish life-long careers with good salaries and the chance to progress within the business.

“This year's apprentices intake builds on our largest ever recruitment of 33 apprentices last year, taking our total number of apprentices to 61 out of 680 staff, almost ten per cent of our workforce.

“These individuals are the future of the company and factor into our plans to manage succession and retirements within our operations. The company is making a significant commitment in terms of wages, training fees and mentoring time for our apprentices, but it is a long-term investment.

“We have to develop our own skills base and appoint trainees in jobs such as Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Machining, Laboratory and Project Management because the projects we undertake are so unique.”

Sheffield Forgemasters has been a staunch champion of modern apprenticeships over the last two decades and has recently been nominated by Sheffield Hallam University for an honorary degree in recognition of the important work of its management and staff.

Rick added: “We actively seek out candidates who demonstrate a positive attitude, are keen to engage and are attentive and willing to learn, it's a steep learning curve and we need them to meet challenges head on.”
