What’s in it for BIFA members? “Simply, that their staff are going to come to YFN events and return to their business more knowledgeable. The modern employers see the value. Yes, there are business reasons why people cannot attend, but as long as employers are encouraging participation, that would be good enough for me. We hope to showcase the industry to the local community as well, which will give employers access to fresh talent and another way to promote their businesses. “I think it is more important to hear from some
of the young people involved.” Kyle Lawrence, who chairs the South East
group, said: “As part of the YFN, it is great to hear practical advice from experienced industry professionals and work alongside colleagues within the industry helping organise events and to have a voice.” Katie-Louise Thompson-Friend, added: “It is
a privilege to play an active role in the YFN; the opportunities it is giving young people and hearing from our guest speakers will help us considerably in our careers.” Paul Szyszkowski, echoed: “Getting
involved with the YFN has enabled me to meet February 2020
fantastic people – who I can consider friends – all working towards the same goal of learning more and promoting the sector, whilst expanding my own personal network along the way. The experience so far has proved invaluable, being able to apply the skills I have learnt in my new role as an import operations supervisor.”
“So, there you go, you heard it from the
people that matter. At these events, young people are building-up their own networks, vital for the future of the industry,” Mr Hobbis said.
So, what else do you need? “Two things. One, to actively encourage and support attendance at YFN events and think of the benefits to the individual, their business and the wider industry. “The second, is that we need BIFA members
to actively support the YFN in the form of patronage, connecting us with engaging speakers, sponsorship, providing facilities for meetings, etc. We have had some great support so far, especially from the governors of the YFN. If every Member did one thing for the YFN in a year, every year, can you imagine what that
would do for not only the YFN, but the industry as a whole.”
Could you, elaborate on that comment more? “I have been in the industry over 30 years and yes, I fell into it. But I hear the same thing all the time and also that no one knows about the industry. I am getting bored of hearing it. But how many go out and talk about it at local schools, colleges or community groups? “We are not the only industry that young
people do not know about, but we need to help ourselves as well. We need more leaders willing to talk and give a little of their time. So, make a pledge to yourself to do one thing and build it into your business plan and annual calendar. The young people joining in the YFN activity will help, but they need broad industry support as well. “Yes, companies want return on investment of
time, but I am convinced you will get it by supporting this initiative and its activities.”
