EYE HEALTH TIPS FOR 2020 VISION

It’s 2020! You’ve probably heard of 2020 vision, but do you know what it means? The term is a visual acuity measurement, also called a Snellen fraction, named after Herman Snellen, the Dutch ophthalmologist who developed it in 1862.

In the Snellen visual acuity system, the top number of the Snellen fraction is the viewing distance between the patient and the eye chart. In the United States, this distance typically is 20 feet; in the UK it is 6 metres - therefore 20/20 is equal to 6/6.

At this testing distance, the size of the letters on one of the smaller lines near the bottom of the eye chart has been standardised to correspond to "normal" visual acuity - this is the "20/20 " line. If you can identify the letters on this line but none smaller, you have normal 20/20 visual acuity.

ELLIS & KILLPARTRICK SHARE THEIR TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR EYES HEALTHY IN 2020 Eat Healthy and Watch Your Weight A balanced diet reduces your risk of eye disease. Include lots of omega-3 fats, found in oily fish and lutein, in dark, green, leafy vegetables such a spinach and kale. It is important to maintain a healthy weight. Obesity can increase the risk of developing diabetes, which in turn can cause sight loss.

Stop Smoking Smoking significantly increases the risk of developing eye diseases which can lead to blindness. In fact, smokers are four times more likely to develop macular degeneration. It’s never too late to benefit from quitting and reducing your risk, however long you’ve been smoking for.

Change Eye Make-up Regularly All make-up has a shelf-life, and eye make-up is no exception. Mascara and liquid eyeliner should be discarded every four months to prevent redness, irritation and eye infections.

Hand Hygiene With Contact Lenses Always wash, rinse and dry your hands before handling contact lenses. Never rinse or store your lenses in tap water, use a contact lens cleaning solution.

Protect Your Eyes From UV UV light is everywhere, even during cloudy days in the UK. When choosing sunglasses, make sure they are safe, look out for the CE, UV 400 or British Standard Marks. Consider polarised lenses to reduce glare from water, snow and wet roads. Photochromic lenses are also a good option, they darken when you’re outside and transform to clear when indoors.
