BIFA adds its support to diversity in logistics
BIFA is adding its support to The Big Logistics Diversity Challenge 2020, which is being organised by Nimble Media Ltd in association with Talent in Logistics. As a supporting organisation,
BIFA will be encouraging its Members to enter a team for the event, which will take place in June 2020. Carl Hobbis, BIFA’s training development manager, said:
“By engaging teams in a series of fun physical, practical and mental team challenges, the event aims to promote the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion across the logistics industry, as well as the business benefits that result when companies improve diversity. “We are already working with Talent in Logistics
through our Young Forwarder Network to help the multimodal logistics sector overcome staff recruitment and skills challenges by recruiting, developing,
engaging and retaining the very best people, so this is a logical extension of that relationship.” The Big Logistics Diversity
Challenge will bring together logistics professionals to look at
how the sector can tackle diversity collaboratively and collectively in an informal setting. The event will also offer the perfect platform for
industry to share best practice, network, team build and help shape what the profession should do next in order to encourage a more inclusive sector. Support also comes from across the industry from
organisations such as: Aston University, Cold Chain Federation, SHD Logistics, Warehouse & Logistics News and ForkliftAction. More information about The Big Logistics Diversity Challenge can be seen at:

weighing equipment must comply with the Non-automatic Weighing Instruments Regulations 2016 if it is used for determination of mass for: • Commercial transactions, • The calculation of a toll, tariff, tax, bonus, penalty, remuneration, indemnity or similar type of payment,
• The application of laws or regulation. Such equipment must be trade
approved and passed as fit for use for trade (in other words stamped) by either the manufacturer, an approved verifier or a Trading Standards officer. During their inspection, Trading
Standards officers checked 18 scales at the premises of 15 freight forwarders, finding a total of 22 faults that rendered the equipment non-compliant – clearly a high percentage of failures. Renfrewshire Council has
advised that based upon the outcome of this relatively small sample, it intends at a later date to visit all freight forwarders operating in its area. This is likely to be discussed
between various Trading Standards offices and may prompt national compliance inspections. All Members are, therefore,
reminded of the need to comply with these regulations to avoid legal action.
