INTERN Spotlight “Brandon has been working for Cannon-Muskegon in our Technical

Department starting in 2019... Brandon has been a welcome addition to Cannon. He is very inquisitive and looks to understand a problem completely and develop the best plan for to solve it. ”

thorough. The scope of the project was to discover why the water was not meet- ing the ASTM standards that the machine claimed to be within its specifications. The objectives were to first learn about the entirety of our purification setup and log the information, then to troubleshoot what the source of the problem was and finally to research and discover a via- ble solution for the problem. The old purifier constantly needed to replace the filters that were in it from clogging or high enough pressure to burst their filtration membranes. Even though the membranes were replaced regularly, there would still be output water that didn’t meet ASTM specification. All ar- eas where the water flowed through such as distillation apparatuses, tubing and a carboy were checked for possible areas of contamination. None of which showed as much of a problem as the wa- ter purifier. The next step was to send out water samples from our tap water source to ensure our tap water feed wasn’t out of the input water specification for the water purifier. In the end the problem was resorted to the purifier being defec- tive and the laboratory was required to replace it with an entirely new system.

O ®

f all the projects that I worked on, finding a solution to our old water purifier was the most

ln order to find a suitable replacement, the old purifier was analyzed for its at- tempted water output and was matched with another purifier at another com- pany that provided all the information needed to justify their output water quality meeting ASTM specification. The information had to be communicated verbally to receive a quote and send the paperwork through sales. Overall the project was a good learning experience for interacting with suppliers when their product claims to reach a desired speci- fication and fails to do so. Other projects included excel file management for an older data system, setting up numbers and cards associated with parts so they can be purchased easily and creating a procedure for a new piece of hardware. Thus far I have learned expectations

often change and goals are not often met in the time frame that was planned. These problems are valuable lessons for learning to communicate any changes to supervisors as soon as they occur to alleviate any problems when it comes to planning. I have also learned the type of work that one is conducting is likely being worked on by other individuals at the same time who have at least equal or greater understanding of the project. These individuals are helpful to cooperate with and learn from when a project is moving slower than a supervisor or you expect. Alternatively, all companies have resources that they have created to increase workflow and are at the disposal of the employee as long as they ask the right questions. My career objectives are to learn

as much as possible from the intelligent engineers, operators, supervisors and overall staff by allowing their experience to direct my pursuit of knowledge. Cannon-Muskegon provides an encompassing work experience that teaches valuable lessons and points students in the right direction.
