Rhona Flin, Professor of Industrial Psychology at Aberdeen Business School, Robert Gordon University (RGU) and Peter Wilson, Vice President, Europe & Mediterranean, Valaris, have both joined the Board, while Sandy Bonner, Managing Director at Bilfinger Salamis UK, will take up a Leadership Team position.


Professor Flin directs and supervises research and consultancy projects on human performance and organisational safety culture in high risk industries and, along with her role at RGU, is also Emeritus Professor of Applied Psychology at the University of Aberdeen.


She began conducting psychological research within the offshore oil and gas industry in 1987 and has studied various aspects of safety and emergency response, such as OIMs’ and supervisors’ safety leadership, risk perception and safety culture on offshore installations, and situational awareness in drillers. She was a member of the Safety Advisory Committee for the Military Aviation Authority of the UK Ministry of Defence and is on the Board of Directors for the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Human Factors Technical Section.


Her work examines human performance in high risk work settings, such as healthcare, aviation and the energy industries, with studies focusing on leadership, safety culture, team skills and cognitive skills. Current projects include psychological factors in the introduction of new technology on the UKCS, managers’ safety leadership and non-technical


Commenting on her appointment to the Board of Step Change in Safety, Professor Flin said;


“I have long been impressed by the work of Step Change in Safety which benefits from unusually high levels of commitment from all sectors of the industry. It is a privilege to be joining the Board and I am looking forward to becoming involved with the workgroups and their future projects.”


Also joining the Board is Peter Wilson, Vice President, Europe & Mediterranean, at Valaris – one of the world’s largest drilling contractors.


Peter became Vice President of the EUM business unit upon the merger of Ensco and Rowan in 2019. Prior to that, he served as Vice President, International Operations for Rowan. He returned to the UK to join Rowan in 2011 after a period running safe and efficient drilling contractor operations in deep-water Brazil and Gulf of Mexico. With a strong foundation in subsea, well engineering and offshore operations starting in the UK, Mr Wilson brings 30 years of experience to the board.


Peter says; “With the ever-changing pressures on our industry, it is now more critical than ever, that we work together to strengthen our safety processes. I look forward to helping the Board make a positive difference on our journey to support the onshore and offshore workforce.’


Joining the Leadership Team is Sandy Bonner who has been the Managing Director of Aberdeen-based industrial services provider, Bilfinger Salamis UK, since 2016 having previously served as Operations Director for

the company’s fabric maintenance division. In his role as MD, Sandy is responsible for expanding Bilfinger Salamis UK’s current market share through the continued development of its core services as well as its specialist offerings including inspection, decommissioning and environmental services.


The Leadership Team is responsible for planning and monitoring the activities of Step Change in Safety, the not-for-profit body which works to raise oil and gas industry standards and share good safety practice.


Sandy adds; “I look forward to actively contributing to Step Change in Safety’s extensive initiatives and industry- leading tools. At Bilfinger, we have a large and diverse workforce with over 2,000 employees working across the North Sea, and I’m keen to ensure our employees fully play their part in collaborating and sharing best practice across all services and disciplines.”


Welcoming the new appointments, Step Change in Safety Executive Director Steve Rae said; “These additions to our Board and Leadership Team demonstrate our intentions to increase engagement and collaboration across a wider stakeholder community. All three appointments bring specific sector experience, knowledge and a shared passion for protecting the workforce. I welcome Rhona, Peter and Sandy to the Step Change in Safety team and look forward to working with them as we develop our operational strategies for the longer term”.


The Step Change in Safety Leadership Team includes senior managers and official from member companies, industry-related trade associations, trade unions, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), along with the onshore and offshore workforce.
