CELEBRATE THE SPRING EQUINOX

The Spr ing Equinox official ly br ings us out of winter and star ts the season of Spr ing, it is one of the four greatest solar festivals of the year. It is also an exciting time and the change of the seasons is an important subject for children to learn.
On 20th March when the Spr ing Equinox occurs, day and night wi l l be equal and there are a number of ways that your pupils can celebrate this natural event at school.

The Equinox and Spring not only marks the start of warmer weather, but it also delivers an exciting array of growth; seeds can be planted, seedlings start to appear, many animals such as lambs are born and we all naturally become happier and more ?

Chi ldren can join in by plant ing their own seeds, whether they are for flowers or fruit and vegetables, they can experience what it?

to nurture something and watch them grow throughout the coming months.
Decor at e a Feast
Tradi t ional ly, the Spr ing Equinox is the t ime for a great Spr ing feast and decorat ing the table is as impor tant as the food i tsel f. So why not make some table decorations for the children to take home?
Resources can include budding twigs, flowers, wi l low catkins, sprout ing bulbs, leaf?s, stones and polystyrene eggs. All of which can be painted and decorated with crafty resources such as coloured feathers and ribbons etc.
To create your own ?feast? the children can also decorate hot cross buns which are readily available this time of year.
Unless you visit a florist, there may not be a wide variety of flowers available for children to pick, so why not allow them to use their imaginations and creativity and create their own flower bouquets using t issue paper and paper straws.

Revel in t he Equinox Air
While the children are learning and celebrating the Spring Equinox, you could take lessons outside, al lowing the chi ldren to breathe in the new Spr ing air so they can feel the first signs of warmth on their skin.
Eggs are one of the symbols of this fest ival since they represent new life and potent ial.
