Don’t let flu spoil the December holidays for your children and you

Flu cases tend to increase in December and January but it’s not too late to get your child vaccinated against flu. Flu can be horrible for children as they suffer the same symptoms as adults including fever, chills and aching muscles and some may need to go to hospital for treatment. The best way to protect your child from flu is by having them vaccinated. Many children have already been vaccinated but there are still many local children yet to take up this opportunity.

For most children, the vaccine is given as a nasal spray. The vaccine has been used over the last six years in the UK where millions of children have been vaccinated. It is safe, quick, effective and painless. GP practices provide the flu vaccination to children of 2 and 3 years of age. The flu vaccine has been offered in schools to all primary school aged children. The flu vaccine is also available to older children with certain long term conditions such as diabetes and asthma requiring a regular preventer inhaler. The flu vaccination is free to these groups.

Vaccinating children each year not only offers protection to children, but also to more vulnerable family members such as grandparents and others in our communities. Reducing the chances of catching flu could also mean you and your children are less likely to need time off school or work due to illness, or to care for sick family members.

Strains of flu can vary from year to year, so even if your child was vaccinated last year it is important that they are protected for this winter. Protect your little ones from flu and make sure you take up the flu vaccine when it is offered. For more information on the children’s flu vaccination programme, go to www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/Pages/child-flu-vaccine.aspx
