[EDITOR’S NOTE]
Many of you may know Brett Melvin from his time with Lift & Move USA, and we’re very grateful to have the opportunity to bring you the latest about his new venture, Bridging America’s Gap. We’ve been writing about the gap between the supply and demand for skilled labor, and you’ve been living with it. With this venture, he is doing the heavy lifting to find ways to address the issue not just in our sector, but across a wide range of industries. At this year’s ICUEE Demo Expo, he held a “Career Skills
Event” bringing students to the floor of this year’s show to learn about opportunities in skilled trades amid the excitement of a major trade show. We’re excited to support any effort that helps breakdown the “college-for-everyone” approach to high school students by promoting skilled trades. In our second Feature, and just in time for LiftEx 2019, we spoke with Steve Hutin, managing director of the UK’s Rope and Sing Specialists. Over the course of several years, we’d noticed that Steve has been establishing additional locations across the UK and recruiting well-known industry professionals to make the most of those investments. Tey’ve tackled some remarkable projects along the way. And made a bigger showing at each successive LiftEx event. He spoke quite extensively about LiftEx – that’s coming up November 13-14 – and how his team makes the best use of that opportunity. Ten we got his perspective on quite a few other areas to shed light on how he’s driven growth effectively for his business. Steve strikes us as having a remarkable ability to keep one eye clearly aimed at work at hand while the other scans the horizon with strategic focus. You’ll also find a submission from Tom Eicher, Director of Engineering for the Caldwell
Group, inc. in this issue as well. Selecting the incorrect clamp or using one incorrectly can present grave hazards, so we are glad to share insights from a knowledgeable expert with a leading manufacturer of lifting clamps. And finally, we meet “Walt the Crane”. Buckner Heavylift Cranes has assembled a Liebherr LR11000 beside the Carrier Dome at Syracuse, and it’s drawn a lot of attention from students and the community. After students named that crane “Walt”, Buckner erected the slightly smaller LR1750/2 that graces our cover on site as well, which became known as “Son of Walt”. We have some great content lining up for our next couple of issues. If you’re working on something that we should be writing about, you need only call or email and we’ll be delighted to cover it.
Best Regards,
