Grey Power thwarts Stansted plans

The Unite trade union is blaming a local council coup by

local

residents for a setback to a scheme to expand London Stansted Airport. It complains that there has been a U-turn over a previous decision to support expansion of the gateway aſt er Uttlesford district council was taken over by the Residents for Uttlesford in May, a group dominated by the “retired and affl uent” according

to regional offi cer Mark Barter. Unite says that the council

planning committee had already provisionally approved

last

November the application to increase the numbers using Stansted from 35 million passengers annually (for which there is already permission) to 43 million However, the new- (or rather look

old) council has now decided to refer the original

decision back to the planning committee in the autumn. Barter said: “This U-turn

demonstrates that the new-look council has little or no concern for ordinary working people who rely on the many jobs that Stansted creates. “The council has been advised

throughout the process by independent planning lawyers, who have confi rmed that there is no reason to not grant permission. Yet there is still delay, so the council’s decision is particularly disappointing given that so many new jobs are reliant on the airport’s growth.”

Choc shoe shuttle

Just how do you get 101 handmade chocolate stiletto shoes from Fulham to Dubai? Not a question many will have asked themselves, but it recently fell to freight forwarder Rhenus to do just that when London firm Cocoa To Thrill asked it to move its handmade products 7,000 km for Arab Fashion Week. The delicate chocolate shoes

demanded bespoke packaging and eventually Rhenus decided to use specialised box pallets.

For the shoes to remain

appearance, so coolants were placed on top of the pallets, ensuring the cargo was maintained at the optimum temperature throughout. Rhenus also worked to optimise the shipment’s route, ensuring it experienced minimal exposure to external temperatures. Rhenus also organised

in pristine condition, the temperature could not be allowed to fluctuate, as this would cause the chocolate to ‘bloom’ and mar their

clearance while the shipment was in Germany, awaiting its connecting flight. We bet the customs classifications people had fun with that.

UK-based forwarder Trans Global Projects Group (TGP) recently moved over 60,000 freight tonnes of modular machinery and equipment to a mining site in Western Australia.

The 62 modules were

delivered to a mining site near Newman where the owner – a committed supporter of breast cancer awareness - encourages its suppliers to paint their

equipment pink. TGP chartered three vessels

to carry the modules from Dalian, China, to Port Headland, Australia and then carried the modules 400 km to the site.
