STRAW GRINDING FOR CATTLE FEEDING

WELCOME to your September issue!

Oh what a night! Recently the Cheshire Young Farmers put on another hugely successful charity event and at The Farmart we were proud to be one of the sponsors. Many thousands of pounds were raised for RABI and Alder Hey Children's hospital, so a massive congratulations must go to the organising team. Just two nights later the marquee was in use again for the YFC summer ball, with the dodgem car rides providing much amusement. As a more cautious Landrover driver myself, the highly responsive/dubious steering on a dodgem car took some getting used to!

Once again, the topic of the weather has dominated most farming conversation this month. As ever it's something we can't have influence over but can only take steps to mitigate problems as, or before they arise. As the Serenity Prayer says: “Give me the grace to accept things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference”

It'll perhaps be with a wry smile that many farming children & spouses read the headline of our writer Susan Leigh's column this week, “What have you got to moan about?” See how she deals with the topic of moaning on page 52.

I'd also like to draw your attention to our article on page 51 in this issue. Here, we have a thought provoking look at the high diagnosis rates of male prostate cancer. With most cases involving men over the age of 50, this certainly captures a very high proportion of our readers. Whilst many farmers are strangers to the doctor, raising awareness of early testing and diagnosis could just be a life saver. Please don't put it off!

Don't forget to register for your free place at the Rearing To Go workshop & conference on mental health in agriculture at Shrewsbury market on 13th Sept. The afternoon auction of calves & hoggets will be particularly popular. Email: peterhynes1979@gmail.com

Finally, I'd like to invite you all to visit our trade stand at the Cheshire Ploughing Match on 25th September. Please do come and have a chat about what you do / don't like about the new look magazine. Any suggestions for future articles or features are most welcome.
