Dereliction of Duty: Is Congress Choosing

Supremacy Over Democracy?

Congresswomen of color deserve to be protected without regard to how powerful and well connected the bully is who incites violence against them

first wife, Anna Williams. Their four sons, Benjamin, Harrison, John and Richard, would grow up on the campus of Jackson State, surrounded by the atmosphere of the historically black institution that their father helped grow.

When his first wife, Mrs. Anna Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley

(Williams) Wilson, passed away in 1967, Dr. Wilson persevered through a world of heartache, leaning on friends and family for support. He was blessed to later meet Dr. Lucy Cutliff, who with her beloved daughter Jennifer, would eventually fill the monumental role of mother in the Wilson household. They later shared in the birth of a daughter, April.

As a couple, Dr. Harrison

If you think most democrats and

republicans in Congress do not love the suppremist position of the President of the United States, you may want to think again. Because of the equal powers of all branches of the federal government, Congress has the power to impeach a rogue president if they found his behavior to be inappropriate. The American public has already seen enough to support such an action. For more than two years Congress

has been claiming to be waiting for a smoking gun before they would move to do anything about the president's behavior. They have Senator Mark Warner(D-VA) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) leading an "investigation" that is taking even longer than the investigation led by Robert Mueller.

Why are these probes taking so long? Let's take a look at Trumps

record and see how long it takes us to reach a conclusion: He has put the lives of congresswomen in jeopardy by constantly inciting his already unstable base of supporters. According to a recent report, a gun shop in North Carolina is using images on a billboard of the four congresswomen of color to sell guns. Trump constantly attacks reporters and media outlets making it less safe

than usual for reporters around the world. We all know what happened to Jamal Khashoggi, the reporter for the Washington Post. Let's just say what happened to him was unspeakable.

It appears that Trump called on

Russians to interfere with our elections during the presidential campaign in 2016 by asking them, on national television, to hack Hillary Clinton's emails. The President of the United States stood next to the President of Russia and essentially said, and I am paraphrasing: Although our intelligence community says Russia interfered with our election in 2016, I do not believe they did. Why would they?

The question every patriotic

American citizen should ask is "Why will Congress not act to protect our democracy?" Are the vast majority of members of Congress suppremists, as well. Actually another reason could be because the people in Congress are afraid of losing their re-election campaigns. If that is the case, they are being derelict in their duties anyway. Let's not kid ourselves, the reason Congress hasn't began impeachment proceedings may very well be because Supremacy Trumps Democracy.

Wilson and Dr. Lucy Wilson built outstanding careers in higher education. Echoing the stories he'd share of his grandmother working to expand black education in the Civil War South, Dr. Wilson committed himself to developing the highest educational standards at the nation's premier Historically Black Colleges and Universities. As an administrator, he contributed to the growth of Tennessee State University, Fisk University, and of course, Norfolk State University where he served as a president beloved by many.

Dr. Wilson believed deeply

in the worth and potential of the schools for which he served. While at Norfolk State, he accomplished university status for what was then Norfolk State College. He increased the number of African American students pursuing STEM fields at the institution. He recruited highly qualified faculty and established mentoring programs to ensure that his students were equipped with the tools for graduation. Dr. Wilson expanded the university's facilities, maintaining positive relationships with state government to expand university resources. He served on the Board of Directors of Bell Atlantic Virginia, the Hampton

projects include but are not limited to: a partnership with the Petersburg Public School Board and other local businesses for a back to school drive at the local YMCA, a Prostate Cancer Awareness Rally, and a Thanksgiving canned food drive where she challenged her peers to provide 40 families with bountiful options for their thanksgiving meal. She has spearheaded several community events such as STEAM DAY (sponsored by Bojangles) where elementary and middle school students were invited on campus for an interactive event to learn how STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture/Arts, and Math) played into their everyday lives. Gabrielle believes that we need more

African American youth involved in STEAM. Aside from civic engagement, Gabrielle has developed an equal

rapport in academic achievements and accomplishments which include membership in the National Society of Leadership & Success, Minority Association for Pre Medical Students, and the Kappa Mu Epsilon National Math Honors Society. She has served on the VSU Royal Court as Miss Freshman (2016-2017) and Miss Sophomore (2017-2018), and won the 2018 Outstanding Sophomore of the Year Award, the 2018 HBCU Kings and Queens Conference Intern of the Year award, and was ranked in the Top Ten Percent of 1000+ applicants of the 2018 Goldman Sachs HBCU Leadership Summit. Her most distinguished honor includes being the first woman in over ten years to serve as the Student Government Association President (2018-2019) in her junior year.

Roads Chamber of Commerce, and the Commonwealth Ethics Committee. He received honorary doctorate degrees from the Eastern Virginia Medical School and Kentucky State University. In 2014, Dr. Wilson travelled to Lexington, Kentucky to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Kentucky with his grandson, Brandon, who received his Masters. Significantly, the University used the occasion as an apology for decades of discriminatory and segregationist admissions policies against African Americans like Wilson.

Of course, Dr. Wilson defined

himself beyond the realm of professionalism. He was a father to six, grandfather to eight, and great grandfather to three. Those closest to him experienced his fantastic capacity for storytelling and oral history, his sense of humor, his wisdom. True to form, Dr. Wilson spent his final days teaching - telling family histories to his children and grandchildren, offering academic and professional advice to those who called on him, peppering in his clever sense of humor. Until his death on July 28, 2019, Dr. Wilson was treasured as a community leader and educator, indispensable to the history of the Hampton Roads, Virginia, and beyond.
