FROM THE EDITOR
Recently, two people in my life told me they don’t feel comfortable going to dance performances because just they “don’t get it.” Much like visual art, dance gets labeled as “elitist” because there is
this underlying
need to understand the intent of a piece. I told them that it’s not about the intent, it’s about the experience. This made me think... do we as dance professionals have a responsibility to educate the public about how to appreciate dance? How is this to
be achieved?
Finding moments to connect with the public in less intimidating environments may be one way to break down perceived barriers. Sometimes we don’t realize how overwhelming it can be to attend a performance, especially if it’s in a downtown location. How do I get there? Where do I park? The show hasn’t even started and some audience members have already experienced stress!
Fortunately, it seems there are more pop-up performances taking place MIX 4 • DANCE NORTH TEXAS • AUGUST – OCTOBER 2019 MINGLE

where dance is going into the community: NorthPark Mall, Over the Bridge Arts at Sylvan 30, The Dallas Public Library and Cultural Centers, to mention a few, are making dance more approachable.
At Dance Council of North Texas we are forever looking for ways to present dance in more accessible environments. On August 10th we’ll hold our annual membership meeting Mix + Mingle—an free opportunity for dancers, dance- lovers and the public to meet and experience dance.
Additionally, the Dallas Dance Film Festival will take place November 2 at the Bachman Lake Branch Library Black Box. In 2018, the response by both the dance community and members of the library was outstanding —we’re hoping to double attendance this year. Many people in the neigborhood were excited to attend a new event.
Please join us at these and all upcoming dance events and help us bring in new audiences to experience the art of dance.
