Harold Good (1910-1984)

Harold James Martin Good, whose Russian coins are included within this catalogue, was born on 11 August 1910. He spent his early working days on Cunard ships but joined the aircraft industry prior to World War II, where he spent most of his working career. Developing an interest in numismatics early in life, his coin collecting encompassed Roman and Byzantine, English silver and copper, Russian and, most close to his heart, tokens of his native Hampshire. He joined the Bournemouth- based Wessex Numismatic Society in January 1950 and founded the Southampton Numismatic Society in March 1953, retaining a close interest in the fortunes of both until his death on 14 June 1984. His Russian coins, mostly collected in the 1950s and 1960s while he maintained a correspondence with officials at the Hermitage Museum on numismatic matters, have been unavailable for study since.

Lots 537-619 comprise a collection of Russian historical medals, principally formed in the 1960s and 1970s and acquired on the London market at that time. Likewise, these have not been available for study for many decades and the group includes a number of important pieces.
