ADVOCACY SPOTLIGHT

additional deadlines were looming: raising spending caps and lifting the debt ceiling. On October 1, the pro- vision of the previous budget deal expires and caps on federal spending come back into force. This enforce- ment of the spending cap would auto- matically reduce military and domes- tic program spending across the board by $125 billion. Further, fiscal ana- lysts had predicted that by October or early November, the Treasury will meet its borrowing limit and be pre- vented from borrowing additional funds to keep government operating. Nothing motivates like a hard deadline, and while these serious and pressing issues draw a significant amount of attention and work from federal representatives, they also spur action. There also is a likelihood that these issues will be outstanding and

play a large role in shaping the pol- icy environment on Capitol Hill dur- ing ASCA’s 2019 National Advocacy Day on September 24. During National Advocacy Day, ASC community members travel to

Washington, DC, to meet with their members of Congress. More than 500 individuals have participated in this opportunity over the past three years. These meetings are effective because ASCA members, as constituents, are able to share their experience caring for patients in an ASC with their members of Congress (turn to page 25 for more details on National Advocacy Day). Although there may be budget bat- tles still looming in Congress come September, lawmakers are keenly inter- ested in supporting families and indi- viduals in their states and districts. Through your continued participation in National Advocacy Day, ASCA can continue to build on its legislative suc- cesses of the last few years.

Steve Selde is ASCA’s assistant director of government and legislative affairs. Write him at sselde@ascassociation.org.
