Proper entrance security at our stadiums is m than ever, but it needs the right mindset an

The past few years have shown us that stadiums and arenas are now as likely to be a target for terrorists or criminals as many other tourist hotspots. There are some simple changes we can make to mitigate these risks, but, as Steve Moody from RWS Ltd discusses, it requires the correct approach. Many stadiums and arenas have some

form of entrance security, but the sheer number of people attending events means a pragmatic approach is also needed. Nonetheless, entrance and perimeter security measures are critical in protecting the people within the building and its vicinity. In the first instance, the right security

measures act as deterrent for would-be criminals or terrorist. Criminals want easy access, while terrorists are seeking maximum damage. Ensuring your stadium has essential measures in place is critical. Sadly, those wishing to harm innocent

people will often pursue their course of action regardless of any preventive measures we take. At this stage, we are looking to prevent or slow down the attack so those in or nearby the stadium can get to safety – every second counts. This is where strategic placement of

bollards, barriers or even trees and art installations, for example, can help prevent or slow down a direct attack on the building and its occupants. Hostile Vehicle

Management (HVM) should be part of your strategic risk management but warrants an article of its own such is its importance nowadays. Entrance and perimeter security can also

have a beneficial impact on staff and visitor wellbeing. Nobody wants to feel like they are visiting a prison but seeing and knowing the stadium takes security seriously can have a positive impact on how people feel and therefore behave. We want to encourage a calm and managed atmosphere as people enter and exit the stadium and the surrounding area so they can go on to enjoy it fully when they are inside. Proper use of perimeter and entrance security also makes the life of security
