Bogdan Gorny Dog Trainer, since 1974 Dog training and how to select a dog trainer? When to start and class formats.
In Canada there is no government agency that regulates or licenses dog trainers, so it is very important to investigate their qualifications before enrolling in a class. A recommendation from a friend, neighbor, veterinarian, humane society, boarding kennel, or groomer is a good place to start. Ask for permission to observe a class. Do not hesitate to talk to the current students; are they enjoying the class and feel that their dogs are learning? If a trainer does not allow you to observe a class, ask yourself (and the trainer) why.
I strongly believe in a rule: “younger the better”. Puppyhood is the best time to educate and socialize dogs. Before you sign for a group class, try to find a trainer who will offer an individual “start up” session for your not yet fully vaccinated puppy. A good trainer will also be happy to talk to you when you are just planning to get a puppy.
In group classes, dogs learn to interact with other dogs, accept contact with other people, and respond to their owners despite distractions. Individual/private lessons are often advised for dogs with behavioral problems, especially aggression.
Dog-only lessons or boarding and training exclude the owner. Those lessons must include additional “transition” lessons for a dog and its owner at the end of the training program.
Family member’s participation. When possible, all family members should participate. The trainer should demonstrate an ability to work with adults as well as with children attending the training sessions.
Good instructors will often use their own dog as an assistant trainer. Such dogs should demonstrate a high level of training, happy attitude and a strong interaction bond with the instructor.
