Summer is upon us and for many, time to embark on new and exciting


adventures


in far off cities and foreign countries. Dance Council


training has


always been an ardent supporter of exposing young talent to different techniques, styles and instructors, offering thousands of dollars in scholarships funded by private donors.


• So, here’s a question…how do we support our pool of young talent by sending them away to


train in the summertime but also entice them to stay home when it comes time to having a career? Why is it so hard for Dallas to compete with cities like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago when it comes to retention of dance talent? The local arts scene is rife with opportunities and partnerships.


• I recently read an article in this month’s Dance Magazine that really struck a cord with me. The article is titled Home, Sweet Home: Why

leaving a major dance hub to return to your roots could be your smartest career move, and it explores the reason some dancers return home to create and perform instead of staying in the big cities. I was disheartened to read that some dancers and choreographers experience “shade” from the scene because their work ISN’T from New York—it’s coming instead from Nashville, Austin and Portland, to name a few. Why is it that artists and choreography created in large cities is elevated over that of those here at home and how do we change it?


• I have so many questions surrounding this issue. Let’s start a dialogue on DCNT’s Facebook page. I’d like to hear from local dancers and choreographers and get their perspective. I want to hear from creatives who have worked in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and other large cities and why they are no longer there. Let’s get together and figure out how we can retain our home-grown talent.
