Teaching children to save lives
KeepaBeat’s Junior Medic Training For Schools courses are aimed at children in Years 2-6. The specialist programme is delivered in short, 45-60 minute sessions teaching lifesaving skills that could one day make a huge difference in an emergency. Each child gets hands-on experience with CPR manikins and is awarded a certificate at the end of the session. Pupils start off on the ‘Junior Medic’ session, which covers topics such as CPR, choking, the recovery position and calling 999. They can then progress onto the Junior Trauma training, which looks at dealing with bleeding, burns, broken bones and asthma attacks. Junior Medic Plus training, for Years 4-6, covers using a defibrillator.
Sarah Cotton, admin assistant/ teaching assistant, Benington Primary School, Herts (95 pupils) (not the school pictured above): ‘We use KeepaBeat regularly for our
staff training at the beginning of September, and we discussed the idea of having our students trained in lifesaving, too. We arranged for it to take place in January, and decided to give the training to our Key Stage 2 children. This was mainly because saving someone’s life is quite a big ask and you need to be quite physical when you do chest compressions for a sustained period of time. The children enjoyed learning how to save a person’s life, and especially enjoyed using the dummies. We are hoping that this will
be a regular event for our students. The benefits of using KeepaBeat
are that they are local to us, and they deliver all the sessions extremely professionally, for children and adults alike. They are also reasonably priced. Our staff KeepaBeat sessions are funded out of the school budget for adult training, but for the children to be trained we asked for parental contributions as this was not something that we had budgeted for. We have been using KeepaBeat
for around 10 years now, and I would highly recommend them for any
lifesaving or first-aid training.’ l For more information, visit
