Shane Record - ‘A Retrospective’ at Folkestone Museum

Folkestone Museum is delighted to present a retrospective of works by self-taught local artist Shane Record. Based in Folkestone, Shane established his gallery and studio in the Old High Street over 15 years ago and was at the forefront of the development of Folkestone’s Creative Quarter. Mainly oils with a palette knife, Shane’s paintings have been capturing the changing landscapes and feel of Folkestone since the early 2000s. He works in his studio and is also a fan of painting quickly ‘en plein air’, lending an immediacy and freshness to his artworks. The exhibition will feature a selection of some of his most iconic pieces, on temporary loan from private collections.

The dynamism of Shane’s work is reflected through every aspect of his practice – Shane has adapted his painting style through a desire to constantly develop and challenge himself. For example, losing the ability to paint with his right hand did not signal a hiatus in Shane’s career; it meant learning to work with his left hand and acquiring new skills he never thought possible. A significant milestone in Shane’s painting career was his ‘100 Paintings Project’. A few days after painting Romney

Marsh from Lympne - a piece which Shane felt showed true promise - he made the decision to create 100 paintings. He reasoned that by the end of it he would know whether he had what it took to become a professional artist or whether it was time to give up on the whole idea. Shane spent every spare moment and sure enough, two years later had turned professional, opened his first gallery in The Old High Street and finished the 100th painting under its roof.

The artwork which kick-started this project is on display in the exhibition. Shane’s show is also an opportunity for the Museum to acquire a specially commissioned artwork for the permanent collection. At present, there are no artistic representations of Folkestone post-1970 amongst the Museum’s art collections. The acquisition via donation of Shane’s work will mark the beginning of this collecting process that will start to address the 50-year gap in the collection. Shane has always engaged actively with the communities that inhabit his landscapes by reaching out to schools with live painting demonstrations and workshops. We will be offering a range of events to coincide with the show, including a live painting event with Shane in the Easter Holidays. Shane is also available for school visits to the Museum.

Bio: Shane graduated from Reading University with a degree in French and Sociology, and took a Masters in European Law in Toulouse, France. His artworks are now highly sought after and feature in private collections locally and internationally.
