What’s in a name? The idea of a name seems so simple and so inconsequential. And yet it is so critical. In fact, it’s something we spend great time deliberating over in our personal lives. Think about the birth of a child. Families discuss weeks, months, and sometimes even years in advance of birth what they would like to name their child. That same type of effort is also spent in deciding the name of a new product or company.
In October of 2017, my father and I purchased the business of Wayne Engineering and formed Curbtender Inc. In the months that led up to that point, we too deliberated frequently about what we would call this new company. It was important that our customers truly understood it was in fact a new company with a new vision, yet one that also retained the strength of its past. In the end, there was only one name for us: Curbtender.
Originally, Curbtender was the name used by Wayne Engineering for its automated side loading (ASL) refuse truck for over 35 years. It was the first commercially produced, and is still the longest produced, ASL in the waste industry. The product features the industry’s best lift arm capacity, best life expectancy, and excellent compaction. Over the years it has also introduced innovative new technologies to the waste industry such as on-screen diagnostics, electric-over-hydraulic controls, multiplexed electronics, propor- tional controls, and operate-at-idle technology. The Curbtender name is known for high performance, durability, and innovation.
As our company transitioned, we felt the Curbtender name perfectly embodied who we wanted our entire company to be- not just what we wanted one product to be. We seek to provide our customers with high performance, durable products that feature a lower total cost of ownership, and we seek to do that while offering world class service and respect.
